Talking to one of the relations I was told Michael Colreavy has said he will not stand again. Martin Kenny will obviously be the replacement candidate and should get in handy. But the thing is the constituency (Sligo and North Leitrim) has been enlarged to include south Leitrim as well as South Donegal and West Cavan. I'd say these changes will make it a 4 seater and if so, surely SF will run a second candidate who would have a decent chance of getting in ?

“The next election will see a much bigger constituency than in 2011. The new constituency will cover Sligo, Leitrim, South Donegal and West Cavan.

So if it's a 4 seater that now includes all of Leitrim, some south Donegal and West Cavan will SF run a 2nd candidate. Chris McManus of Sligo maybe ?

And who is running for FG and FF. Also could Declan Bree stand again as a left Indo or is he getting too old and if not, is there any possible strong Indo to stand ?

Martin Kenny for SF should take a seat. He polled very well in the recent Roscommon by-election - coming 3rd and out-polling the FG candidate (who was based in Co. Roscommon). Kenny took a huge portion of his vote out of Leitrim and should hold that and build on it in the new constituency.

so who will get the 4 seats ?
Possibly FG's Perry, FF Marc McSharry and SF's Martin Kenny. But there's 4th seat there for the taking, knowing FF and FG they will think it's theirs, but a decent SFer (Chris McManus ? He may swing the Sligo anti FG/FF/LP vote to SF while getting the Leitrim/S Donegal/W Cavan SF 2nd prefs) or an Indo could well take it. So for those of you down there, your thoughts ?

But what about Sligo town's Chris McManus ? Could he swing the Sligo anti FG/FF/LP vote to SF while getting the Leitrim/S Donegal/W Cavan Sinn Fein 2nd prefs for the 4th seat ??

McSharry may not get the nomination but FF should take one. FG will take one and Kenny looks a dead cert for SF. The 4th seat will be a dog fight between an Indo and the second SF candidate.

There was a big Ind vote in Sligo in the Locals 31%, and a fair one in the last election. If one of them can pull ahead of the Others they stand a fair chance, Bree seems to be the obvious candidate.

Bree would be the obvious candidate as an Indo, but he's no spring chicken, he'd be the same age as Michael Colreavy, don't known how keen he would be to run. If he didn't run, any idea of what Indo he might back in Sligo ?

SF should take Bree under their wing, he's been one of them in all but name for donkeys' years.

Haven't a clue. He's a fresh looking 63/64 year old. I'd say he'll run again with a good lift from the anti-water charges campaign.

If SF don't run a second candidate then Brees chances of being elected will be enhanced.

Bree has been a secret member of the Communist Party for more than 40 years. He keeps it quiet because it wouldn't help his election prospects. He is a Republican Socialist though.

don't like sinn fein but putting party politics aside it would have been nice to have two Leitrim TDs in the dail, and i think Colreavy in north Leitrim with sligo and donegal votes tucked in would be returned as would Kenny in south Leitrim with part of cavan added. now we will have only one in Kenny

Bree stood against hunger striker Joe McDonnell back in 1981 causing Joe to miss the seat by about 300 votes. He's just a typical Marxist scumbag, would throw everyone under a bus and tell them it was for the greater good of the ' revolution ' quoting Lenin and Trotsky's support for the KGB etc Not too fast to throw himself under the same bus of course like every true Marxist.

Bree is no republican.
He won't take a seat either, no chance.

There'll be one each for FF,FG and SF.

SF convention was tonight, only one candidate selected - Martin Kenny.

I can't think of any Independent who would be strong enough to take a seat here.
Margaret Gomley would have a chance but of she was interested in running for the dail she's have run years ago.

As it stands the last seat s a fight between FF & FG.

4 FGers will likely be looking for a nomination, McLoughlin, Perry, Comiskey and McCartan. Will they run 2 or 3?

MacSharry is the only FFer to declare so far. I'd say him and possibly John Paul Feely from Cavan on the ticket
