Should local authorities be able to set the minimum wage in their area?

I was chatting with a guy who owns a local shop the other night and he was talking about hiring staff for Christmas. He made what sounded like a very good point. Given the higher cost of living in Dublin and the higher unemployment rates in cities like Limerick, should the local authorities be able to set the minimum wage locally? By doing so they could encourage business in unemployment blackspots to keep workers and give give those working in Dublin some extra money to cope with higher prices there.

Maybe, but what defo should happen is that the rates should be lowest in town and city centres and highest in suburban areas, in order to help put a brake on sprawl and foster growth in our tradiitonal retail areas..
