Shouldn't the gardai be able to identify and prosecute gangs of young hooligans on the DART trains?

See https://www.independent.ie/irish-news/irish-rail-to-immediately-deploy-additional-security-to-dublin-northside-services-37038243.html

Additional security from Irish rail may be unable to tackle gangs of young hooligans and drug dealers if some of them are armed with weapons such as knives and outnumber security staff by swarming on board trains.

There is political and trade union talk of setting up a transport police. That could prove extremely expensive if there were demands for wage parity with the gardai (around 70,000 euros a year average plus 40,000 pension entitlements),demands quite likely with militant public sector unions.

The hooligan incidents may be down to lack of security and hopefully will prove temporary if security is improved. The gardai are in a vastly better position to deal with these criminals than railway security, for instance by using garda intelligence on potential suspects and experience in surveillance. It should be possible for the gardai to anticipate gang invasions of trains and for undercover gardai on board trains to arrest gangs as they commit crimes.

A simple solution; notices on trains explaining to the public a simple procedure for reporting an incident.
Eg dial the usual emergency number and state "train invasion, station name, northsouthbound". Alternatively text a dedicated number the same info.
Info then relayed instantly to relevant Garda stations along the route, who then despatch a number of squad cars and/or armed response units to the next stations along until they intercept the train.
All it takes is a pre-planned procedure + response. Everybody on a train these days has a phone in their hands.
If its a malicious false alarm, trace the phone and prosecute the owner.

Whatever about scum on the Dart, as a woman I'd really like to know the identity of that guy who is on the run but still managed to rape woman, stick a knife in her vagina, beat her and smash a TV over her head before she managed to escape and throw herself over a balcony. There's a duty to let women see the face of these guys so we know who they are. Circulating his description to Garda stations is no good to the public, I wonder if this is another case of protecting an ethnic minority at the expense of women in Ireland.

If there is one thing I hate it's people claiming that teenagers in disadvantages areas have nothing to do in Dublin.

100% absolute rubbish.

Dublin is full of GAA clubs,Rugby clubs,Tennis clubs, soccer clubs, various other sports clubs etc.
For those who dont like sports there are hundreds of various other activities such as drama, music, dance etc.

We spent millions on all this stuff and many people give up their own free time to help out in these clubs.

After all that effort the best thing these scumbags can do is cause trouble on a train.

Its so scary. This guy is on the loose. His picture should be everywhere. This guy will most likely keep going until he gets caught. I don't know why his picture is being kept from the public.

Speculation that trains won’t go north of Connolly after 7pm. That seems harsh on people in maladies and portmarnock. Surely a non stop train to those two stations would be safe, hard to attack a moving train.

Many buses in Limerick no longer go to some knocker areas, the knackers are damaging their own lives, their own family . Like the thickos who in some knocker area of Dublin, with one day of snow, limiting Garda presence , tore down the local supermarket.

Would garda stations close by have enough staff to deal with a large violent gang? The armed response units would be needed to deal with knife attacks.

Public sector unions live by wage parities, even fictional ones such as the train and bus driver pay demands triggered by the huge pay increase of Luas drivers. Maybe the unions dug up a parity that existed with the 1950s tram drivers!

What evidence do you have for the latter? None, because the gardai wouldn't disclose that outside of a public enquiry.

Social exclusion in public housing ghettos of the lowest income people explains most of this criminality. Socail and affordable housing needs to include a social mix of people. This should be built now that the state has begun investing in it again after a 40 year lull.

Why, if they are good, do they act so bad when together?

This was tried in my neighbourhood with the result that they robbed all around them, got away with it for most of the time before enough complaints were made to get them moved out. It is entirely unfair to put scum in with people who are paying a mortgage or private rent. Most people in Social housing are decent people but those people tend not to be the ones moved into nice areas, it's the antisocial ones that have had so many complaints in one area that have been evicted and moved to the next because they have kids and are ''entitled'' to be housed.
