The History Show had an interesting item on Travelling to areas which are seeing significant historical anniversaries of events this year.

RTÉ Radio Player

Included were -
The Luther Year Anniversary in Wittenburg (500th of Martin Luther nailing his thesis on the door of a church!).
The centenary of The 2 1917 Russian Revolutions.
The Alaska Purchase, Think what would /could have happened if Russia never sold it.
The Finnish Independence centenary, which is apparently could to be celebrated like our 1916 rising.
The establishment in 1867 of The Dominion of Canada.

Other anniversaries of note include

The Biafran War started 50 years ago.
JFK was born 100 years ago.
The centenary of the decisive entry of The Americans into WW1!
June 1 is the 50th anniversary of the release of the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.
Centennial of the Balfour Declaration, November 2, 1917.
The 50th anniversary of the death of Che Guevara.
January 15 marks the 125th anniversary of James Naismith’s publishing of the rules of basketball.
The 50th anniversary of The 6 day war is also this year.

An event that resulted in the average IQ in both Wales and Ireland increasing by 10 points!

Indeed the university of revolution!
It also saw the popularisation of what was to become our national anthem!
I'm amzaed the Britz for their own imperialistic motives didn't just execute the 3000 or so ladz, though it would have pissed off American public opinion!

It may have also upped the aesthethic looks of people from both countries, when it was originally established!petunia

Being it the height of WW1 I think they just wanted the 'Irish Question' to simply go away. Those they released ensured it wouldn't!

2017 is the 800th anniversary of the Charter of the Forest.

Much more important than the better known Magna Carta, the Charter of the Forest provided some real rights, privileges and protections for the common man against the abuses of the encroaching aristocracy.
