Sindo: Lawlor killed in red-light district with teenage girl

I hope nobody minds, but I think this deserves a new thread.

The Sunday Independent has reported that Liam Lawlor was killed in a car crash. Just like every other paper. But their story is that he was with a teenage prostitute at the time.

I don't know what to make of this. I don't really have a problem with the normal Indo (I prefer the IT, but that's more to do with the IT than the Indo). But I really don't like the Sindo. Still, I'd say they'd have to be very sure to print this (especially in such a prominent postion).

The picture they use is one of Liam Lawlor, his wife and wait for it... Glenda Gilson!!! She always gets in the Sindo - no matter what the story!

She's his niece & a reputable model.

The political angle must be that this tragic end to a 'colourful' political career will delflect public attention from the speeches in Killarney.

they don't have to be sure about anything Pidge, they can basically write whatever about Liam Lawlor now that they want. Under irish law, you cannot libel a dead person.

In terms of Liam Lawlors family, that was a disgusting headline, along with the lurid article that followed on the front page.

I wonder how the editorial team knew so much about "the red light districts of Moscow" ?

Some neck from a newspaper that had one of its own journalists take a job as an escort, then have the editor and a second senior correspondent fight over who should be her first client.

Still, what do you expect.

Yes, but if she was fat she wouldn't be on the front page.

I think it's just a question of taste and decency really. We all know what he did, and it is one thing to criticise him, it's quite another to say that this was "karma" which almost suggests that he deserved to die.
Oh dear!! If only MJ's favourite newspaper was as compassionate as MJ. :(

What would it take for her to be a disreputable model?

Is it five or six Bacardi Breezers?
Classic man, classic!

I think Kate Moss has set the bar on that one

While I normally don't pull punches about my feelings about the Indo, if those ARE the facts of the story, then they have a right to publish them. I haven't seen the actual content or the headline but given what RockOfCashel says and the Sindo's track record I can't imagine they'd be in the best possible taste.

At the end of the the day, if Liam Lawlor agreed to a prostitute - teenage or otherwise - being solicited on his behalf, then he is the one responsible - albeit posthumously - for the hurt to his wife and family.

Absolutely. If the SBP or the Trib had published this, people wouldn't be half as morally outraged.

The family of former Fianna Fáil TD Liam Lawlor, who was killed in a car crash in Moscow, today hit out at claims he may have been with a prostitute at the time of his death.

Mr Lawlor, who was jailed three times for failing to comply with the tribunal investigating planning corruption in Co Dublin, was on a business trip when he died in the crash in the Russian capital in the early hours of Saturday.

Just because they're furious doesn't mean it isn't true; they don't seem to be disputing it.

There's an interesting (albeit a little bizarre) take on this over on indymedia.

Arguably, there will still some unanswered questions regarding his business affairs at the the time of his unfortunate demise.

In death, however, Mr Lawlor has redeemed himself. In his car at the time of his death was a 15 year-old Ukrainian girl, homeless and recently arrived in Moscow. Mr Lawlor was taking her to a refuge (at great speed because of the need to evade a predatory ring-leader of a Moscow prostitution racket) at the time of the fatal accident.

It was not the first such intervention by Mr Lawlor, who was well-known for his rescue work in Prague. He had helped many young women in the Czech republic to escape from a life of prostitution, and had donated hundreds of thousands of thousands to establishing charities
dedicated to the rescue of those involved in the sex industry

But if they prove NOT to be the facts, the Sindo deserves to be boycotted.

And on the way home from his meeting about perfectly legitimate business dealings with some perfectly legitimate Russian businessmen he happened to come across a young girl walking home from a late night Legion of Mary meeting. Chiding the girl for her naivity in walking the streets alone (even if one's head is bowed in prayer), big hearted Liam agreed to drive her home to her parents. The car drove on and Liam and the young devotee had just settled into their third decade of the rosary when suddenly.........

I just hope this is serious (if it's a joke it's in poor taste)

And if it is serious, I hope that it's actually true.

Actually, according to RTE, the family are denying that the girl was a prostitute.

In a statement this afternoon, the family of the late Liam Lawlor said they were saddened by what they described as inaccurate, reckless and vindictive coverage on the circumstances of his death by some sections of the media.

The former Fianna Fáil TD was killed in a car accident in Russia yesterday while on a business trip.

The driver of the car was killed and a female passenger, a Ukrainian woman, was injured. She worked as an interpreter/assistant in Prague and had accompanied Liam Lawlor to Moscow on a business trip.
Which is a little more plausible than the indymedia 'He did a lot of work for d'young people and d'charidee' line. However that could be a reference to the Observer story, which states:

It is known that, while on regular trips to Prague, Lawlor, the first Irish politician to be jailed for corruption, visited brothels and sex clubs in the Czech capital.
and also

Last night former associates said Lawlor had been afraid to testify against leading Dublin criminals he had been colluding with in laundering cash into property developments.
Well bless my soul!

The Sindo is certainly the most disgusting paper in the country.

I hope the editor gets cancer.
