The SF ard fheis is being held 100 years on from the Rising on the banks of the Liffey close to the spot where Helga shelled Liberty Hall and the GPO and in the building where 5 years ago Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth was entertained. 2,000 delegate from Ireland and abroad will attend ahead of the Assembly Elections up north. Many will of course be going around with their fingers crossed that they'll duck out of responsibility of taking the decisions.

Across the river in Trinity close to where the British artillery shelled the GPO 100 years ago, FF and FG continue to shoot the breeze while they count days on the calendar. No star billing for Syriza, indeed not even a mention of the crisis which last year almost sundered the EU on the clár. The best they can do is to complain about BREXIT but no clear campaign from SF to tell Irish voters up north that the interest of the island lies instead with Britain in the EU.

It seems that the party is looking for an out already on this as they have a motion looking for a Re-unification Referendum in the event of BREXIT.

Where to now for SF as their vote flatlines in both parts of the island?

Their vote has flatlined in NI but they could or will will make serious further gains if the following circumstances 1) Another recession, 2) They get a new leader who has half an idea about economic and financial issues and 3 ) They actually get some sane economic policies.

Claire Byrne at the Ard Fheis now.....Pearse, Mary Lou, Tobin, McGuinness.....

Claire asking Tobin if he would be willing to take a "sabattical" again on pro-life issue.

Will you kick him out again, she asks McGuinness

We'll have to wait and see, says McG...and other stuff..

Pearse saying "disciplinary" issues within SF will be discussed. They're considering the GAA model....

Martin McGuinness has described Sinn Fein as a Pro Life party that opposed the extension of the 1967 Abortion Act to the north and that only in extreme cases like Savita Halappanavar would allow abortion in Ireland.

A lot of FF TD's signed up to the pledge to oppose the repeal of the 8th ammendment and it seems that SF are obviously looking over their shoulders at FF on this one.

And ladies and gentlemen, the main event of the evening. Listen to Gerry Adams talk about James Connolly for a snip at ‎€75...

Yes, talk about James Connolly.

Jesus wept...

And no concession price for the unemployed or low paid.
He also charged 20k for a speech on the Famine a few years back as well.

Regarding the Ard Fheis.
Is there not a single SF member or Cumann opposing the EU?
Not one unhappy with Irelands loss of sovereignty??
Considering SF's position for over 30 years you'd expect to have at least one SF member who still opposes Brussels.

SF can't be trusted on abortion, many of their younger members and TDS would be in favour of abortion, their Northern membership would be slightly more conservative on this issue.

There probably are individual SF members who would like to see a Brexit but don't have the balls to speak out.

To be fair, such a dinner has its costs. Here's the fine fare and wines that greeted revellers at the annual SF dinner last November in Manhattan. Bishop Marchinkus, the disgraced head of the Vatican Bank, used to tell the pope that you can't run the vatican on Hail Mary's.
Seems Gerry is a big fan of the Bishop. I wonder what Bobby Sands would make of it all?

I have to say it, anyone, even the decent skins on here, who support SF are absolute thick paddies. This party is not a socialist party or a working class party. It is an absolute joke that they're still considered left wing.

They are a social democratic party, and not the old Rosa days of social democracy. The Third Way social democrats.

How anyone of a left persuasion could support SF is beyond me. How even the Free State media keep attacking them is also bizarre. They have been castrated politically and militarily. Vincent Browne is correct, they're now a Free State party. Nothing else.

Harsh but there is a lot of truth in what you say.

Many of their poorer voters are also woefully ignorant of their PC stance on immigration.

It stopped being the Free State in 1949 but have you ever considered the hysterics about them actually aid their vote? When I have made criticisms of the Shinners people have pointed to the media's hyperbole about them as proof that they are somehow Socialist or whatever.

Afraid the chance of the three circumstance you mention happening are close to zero---they seem to be a clueless lot all governed by a mantra that has no place in modern Irish politics

'Hate filled people' is a bit of an over the top charge. You can't see and irony in James Connolly, the largest man on a SF poster, selling dinner tickets for 75 Euro by a party that are self-proclaimed saviours of the left?

Several are timetabled between 8.30 and 9pm tonight. Indeed one will commence at 8.31 and will last 30 seconds which is just 30 seconds less than the warning diners at La Mons got.
How much warning did the Civil Rights marchers who were brutally murdered by hired mercenaies on Bloody Sunday get?
