He handed it back. Even it was conditional on his part, the council (who awards the title) decided that they should accept his returning award. Now he's annoyed because they did what he wanted.

Who cares?

Geldof is a clown, end of.

Nobody cares about his little award except him and a media looking to stuff their pages with inane dribble.

I think it was thin-skinned and petty of the Council. And it may yet rebound on them.

Yes, it was that simple. Not.

He took measures to highlight a very grave issue, and made it clear that he would love to remain a free-person of the City of Dublin, if herself was removed from the roll of honour.

The Shinner Lord Mayor and many of his council colleagues had their egos damaged by Geldof. The Shinner Lord Mayor made this obvious, on the radio yesterday. A prize arsehole.

I'm no particular fan of Geldof, but he was given the Freedom of the City for good reason, he made a big case of relinquishing it for good reason, and then the Council vindictively took from him, what he clearly wanted to keep. They passed the motion after passing the motion to remove Ang San Suu Kyi.

Did he write to the council asking them to rescind the award to Aung San Suu Kyi before he publicly handed back his award? If not then he was abusing his own award for publicity and deserves to lose it.

It looks petty but I don't remember hearing Geldof quietly asking them to remove her before he went the big mouthed route. Probable that they would have happily done so.
He also kept the knighthood from another state that he obviously values much more highly despite it having very strong associations with bloodshed, ethnic cleansing, rape pillage and all the accoutrements of empire.

A plague on all their houses.

Aung San Suu Kyi, Geldof the attention seeker and the Council.

What is with this Freedom of crap anyway? If SF or any of the other supposedly republican parties believed in a Republic of equals they would be pushing to have this Freedom of Dublin nonsense abolished.

But as with Honorary doctorates, it is another bauble to be handed out as largesse.

Did he not abuse the Shinners when they pointed out he was hanging onto his knighthood? Foolish man.

a right mess here in a Sinn Fein / IRA council..........

https://www.rte.ie/news/dublin/2017/1214/927409-geldof/

It is blatantly obvious that Geldof was willing to stay as a freeman......

Shameful behaviour indeed....
so blatantly that he rang the papers to get him in shot handing back the scroll?

and unless the councilors forced Geldof at gunpoint to hand it back, then there's one person to blame, and that's Robert Frederick Zenon Geldof, Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire.

incidentally, he hasn't handed back his knighthood........

I see the same award is to be given to Barack Obama...

Whose administration forced Ireland into bailing out bondholders costing taxpayers tens of billions in the process. F*cking imbeciles!

Scrap the practice altogether.

Something I've asked before but never had an answer - according to Bunreacht he had to have permission to accept this foreign honour - who decides and how is it decided? Is there a Dáil committee of TDs?
Is it not permission from the govt, not the dail? If so a govt decision would've sufficed.
