Well, the long-discussed has finally happened and Gerry Adams has announced his retirement from active politics.

This for many will represent both an actual and symbolic break with the era of 'The Struggle'. With that in mind, the choice of the new SF leader is critical - can they break the FG\FF duopoly in Southern politics and become a genuine alternative to the status quo or, with the loss of their last remaining figure of international renown, will they sink back into the pack of micro-parties? Who knows - the choice of leader is critical.

Mary Lou has long appeared to be The Chosen One but has stumbled lately in showdowns with the Taoiseach. Is she still the frontrunner? Who are the alternatives and how do they stand?

Also; what will the format of the leadership election be? Is it a simple one member, one vote format or is it something akin to the FG format, with different weightings given to the various groupings within the party?

Thoughts please piesters!

I presume he will know pass the box of semtex over to Mary Lou.

Does she fit her own description of a "good republican" ??

That is the presumption but party leadership contests can quickly take on a life of their own. Ask Jeb Bush.

Have we any insight as to the format the election will follow?

Seriously... another Gerry is resigning thread?

Some serious merging needed... cos few beyond SF give a crap.

It's just the same auld self regarding nonsense every political party indulges in when changing their leader...

SF are just like the rest in this regard...

No. This is the step after.

Adams is now The Past. Who is The Future?

If they want a break with the past arguably it may not happen Doherty and Mary Lou are the only two viable options.

Ah... ok...

The only SF'er who I think could make serious headway down south is Louise O'Reilly...

Mary Lou is a pain in the hole and the Nordie accents are too...

Adams is certainly not the past.

His new role is being forensically prepared. He will continue to be a member of the Ard Comhairle but will now be free for media appearances especially among the dispora and will probably be offered an honorary degrees from, I suspect, either Cuba and South Africa. He will be a tremendous draw at election time and will no doubt write a few books. Adams will be consulted as to his expertise in conflict resolution and his profile will be even greater than heretofore.

FG and FF were warned. Be careful what you wish for!

Lol, do fg still pass the rusty revolver petunia
FG wait for the media to tell them when to move.

And then the media organs owned by the Media Oligarch promote one of the candidates. After which they all fall into line and vote for the candidate who gets the most votes from the Malta jury.

What ever argument could be made for the northern boys being "republicans", the new recruits are nothing but Socialists, Marxists and Liberals.

You are underselling Gerry here . Surely Zimbabwe and Venezuela will award Gerry an honorary doctorate for services to economics .

In other words they smell state largesse.

I think it will be Mary Lou, although personally I'd prefer Doherty.
Could there be other candidates who might split the vote? A SF Ross Perot if you will. Could it be a three or even four way contest?

Also; per the question in the OP, what are the rules and the format of the leadership election?
