Ms Ocasio-Cortez offers a glimmer of hope in the despair that is Trump's America. She defines socialism as “democratic participation in our economic dignity, and our economic, social, and racial dignity”.

“It is about direct representation and people actually having power and stake over their economic and social wellness, at the end of the day,” she said. “To me, what socialism means is to guarantee a basic level of dignity."

The only hope for Americans who want to get rid of Trump is to first take control of the Democratic Party and use it as a vehicle for change. Tough job but somewhere and by somebody a beginning must be made, as Fintan Lawlor said.

This event is big news.

It represents a sharp turn leftward in a city where there has historically been a lot of business and wealth.

One wonders about whether or not anybody in the NY Democrat voting process heard about the consequences of socialism in Venezuela...it seems that there is a massive amount of cognitive dissonance involved.

Maybe they want to find out the hard way.....

This was a big upset last night, one of the biggest since Eric Cantor lost his race in 2014.

These guys have one eye on the Speakers chair but no eye on their own seat and forget that all politics is local.

She was a real long shot, against an establishment figure but won the old fashioned way, pounding the pavement, little money but generated lots of enthusiasm.

Fair play to her and to Crowley for a gracious concession and rapid endorsement of her.

It's a safe Democratic seat so she will win comfortably in November.

I see this as a sign that the Left in America has now gone complete barking mad. It's written as if she has won office.

It's

a

fúcking

primary.

That little Trotsky is unelectable, even for a rolled gold Democrat seat.

She is just a social democrat, would be in the centre if in the British Labour Party. A member of the DSA. She will be comfortably elected.

Trump has been bailed out again, by the left.

One wonders if Linda Sarsour was one of the pavement pounders backing AOC ?

She comes across as a load of cliches. No wonder the London bin-dependent comic is excited.

Also, she was a former interm with Teddy Kennedy. Unlike Mary Jo, she did not go to Chappaquidick - or at least, we have not been informed of her ever being in Chappaquidick.

Excellent film, by the way. I was so impressed that I changed my avatar.

If the democrats go further left with more candidates like this then they are in big trouble. This is a massive upset and in my view will only embolden the Bernie wing of the democratic party. Not a good strategy for winning with moderate dems and independents

She's won office. She's a democrat in New York. Since the establishment of the district no GOPer has gotten over 30%.

14th district to be precise. And you really should do some cursory research before blathering:

https://ballotpedia.org/New_York's_14th_Congressional_District_election,_2018

In particular, check out the pivot counties and some of the amazing pro-Trump swings recorded in 2016.

This woman is so out there, I wouldn't bet in her favour in a two horse race. Even in a district with the 14th recent history. Because this is now different.

If Trump throws his weight into this one, with a good pro-Trump candidate, it could easily go Rep.

This is the Democrats eating themselves from the far Left, along with the likes of Maxine Waters.

She has a bold vision for the future - I would call it Caracas on the Hudson.

That's a link that shows me that the GOP won 17% last time and didn't bother running in 2014.

She's won the office. She literally doesn't need to campaign.

Spoilers for Tennessee: Jimmy Duncan wins his seat forever until he gifts it to his firstborn.

Forget "last time". This is this time.

If this is fought as Trump v. anti-Trump she is in trouble. Trump politics isn't Dem v. GOP politics. The worst failing of the Democrats is that they still don't seem to have copped on to that yet.

This will be "Caracas on the Hudson" versus anybody who disagrees.
