A FINE Gael MEP, Jim Higgins last night defended his decision to go on a three-day "study break" to a holiday island at taxpayers' expense. He claimed the three-day stay in a five-star hotel on THE Madeira island trip represented value for money because of the "important work" taking place.

For people who work so hard, we're entitled to that. You don't expect us to stay in B&Bs, do you?"

His colleagues Gay Mitchell, Mairead McGuinness and Sean Kelly declined the invitation.

That's going to bite them.
For his language alone as
a pointer to our politicians'
sense of entitlement.

“That’s all s***e … that’s all s***e if you don’t mind me saying so”: Jim Higgins

Jim 'Swimmer' Higgins shows he sterling command of the English language when commenting about an EPP junket to the Island of Madeira at a cost of €400k.
Asked whether the cost – given that it was being footed by the EU, which in turn is funded by the citizenry – was value for money, Higgins said any fuss over the expenses being incurred was “all sh*te if you don’t mind me saying so. That’s typical media bluster, you know. I don’t share that [belief] at all.

“I haven’t a clue what star [hotel] it is. All I know is that it’s a very good hotel, the accommodation is wonderful, the food is lovely. For people who work so hard, we’re entitled to that. You don’t expect us to stay in B&Bs, do you?” he asked.

Jim clearly has yet to get the message that the use of the word 'entitled' just does not wash with the public anymore.

Whats an EPP junket? Regardless, I'd be shocked if an opposition TD had any reason to travel to madeira and EK should respond to this issue.

Frankly, the more I see these stories, the more I wonder if we should bar politicians from holding office for more than 10 or 15 years as they just seem to get too used to the high life.

Look the new Political Director is doing a great job guys. FG members aren't giving terrible, damaging interviews. A clear line from the top is being followed on expenses. FG are controlling their message. You're all just pro-FFers if you think otherwise.

BTW cost of this 5 star trip is an astounding €1,000

Wow. €1,000

How much was a ticket at the Galway FF tent?

Or how much has FF wasted on Thornton Hall, e-voting etc etc
I fail to see how that excuses the cost of junkets like this. It's hypocritical to lecture FF on the money they squander in expenses and junkets when there are FG TDs doing the exact same thing.

So you think €1k for 3 nights including flights & Accomodation is excessive?

If FF were to organise this it would probably have been for 7 nights over the course of the Maderia 1,000 Guineas and probably cost €20k a head.

Get real. Chalk and cheese

Jim Higgins takes to the skies

Spotty was most relieved to read this story in the Independent today. Spotty knows how hard our MEPs work - especially Jim Higgins - and is delighted that they are getting some much-needed R&R.

A FINE Gael MEP last night defended his decision to go on a three-day "study break" to a holiday island at taxpayers' expense.
Amid cutbacks across all EU countries, the MEP last night blasted scrutiny of the €400,000 cost of the Madeira island trip as "all ************************e". Some 250 MEPs and officials have been taking part in the "study break" since Tuesday.
MEPS are believed to be staying at two five-star hotels on the island -- the Pestana Carlton and the Pestana Casino. Earlier this year, Mr Higgins said he was prevented from surrendering his ministerial and Dail pensions because of a Circuit Court order relating to a "family law matter".
Spotty thinks this is a mean-spirited article. It is only right and fair in Spotty's view that we taxpayers should stump up the cash for Mr. Higgins and his fellow denizens of Brussels to take a nice break in Madeira. After all, as Jim says himself, it was a fact-finding mission:

Defending the trip, Mr Higgins claimed it was important to visit the "outermost regions" such as Madeira as they often feel detached from the mainland.

"I totally defend the rights of a political party to see at first hand what the situation is in relation to the outermost regions, islands and so on," Mr Higgins said.
Indeed, Jim. Spotty quite concurs. It is absolutely essential to take 250 MEPs,
80 assistants, and 70 civil servants off to Madeira in order that they not "feel detached".

Spotty anticipates that there may be some bad publicity for Jim Higgins out of this, but feels on balance that it would be unfair.

After all, the voters sent him to Brussels knowing full well how Jim feels about these things. [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vg_JjZJSU1E&feature=player_embedded"]what his position on these matters is. [/ame]

Spotty, for one, congratulates Jim for staying true to himself. Spotty exhorts Jim not to let the begrudgers get him down.

Further proof required please.
Spotty has joined the Green Party, and wonders what more proof you could need that Spotty is a thinker. The fact of the matter is that there is simply no more important issue in our times than the forthcoming wipeout of cute white bears in the north pole, and the rise of sea levels that will condemn poor Bangladeshis to a life on the ocean waves, like the pirates of yore.

Spotty hates carbon more than anything in the world.
