"South Park" causes anger by putting Turkish flag on Al-Qaeda planes

A recent episode of South Park has caused controversy in Turkey by featuring a scene in which terrorist attacks are carried out by Al-Qaeda planes bearing Turkish flags.

Recently a conservative Christian group produced a documentary featuring the Turkish flag flying amid the ruins of the world trade centre.

In fact none of the 9/11 hijackers were Turkish

Turks feel an attempt is being made to link Turkey with Al-Qaeda.

Yes, it must be true, because South Park is of course a tool of the Yankee Imperialists. There sniffy and rather odd protest stems from a basic lack of awareness amongst mopst people as to what firstly the Turkish flag looks like. Secondly the fact that chose this:



.... an ISLAMIC SYMBOL, as their flag. It may be a suprise to Ankara that most people don't know what their flag is. It might also be a suprise that few care. Any colour background is bound to offend someone who also uses that shared islamic symbolism. The principle fact is no matter what the background colour, Turkey could have chosen a less common RELIGIOUS symbol to represent its secular state.

From the OP link I did think this was pretty funny in an odd way with regard to Ground Zero image:

After receiving many complaints about the image, the organization recently announced that they “did not mean to single out Turkey and therefore, the cover will be altered to include the flags of Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Iran, Sudan and Syria.”
Come one, offend all. Thats equality. Seriously, Turkey is one amongst dozens of Muslim countries who happily see foreign flags (Danish and US in particular) burned on their streets gleefully. And now they are sensitive? The Turks can get stuffed. They are in no position to preach to anyone on race hate, bigotry and especially tolerance.

Under Turkish law your words constitute the serious criminal offence of 'Insulting Turkishness' -:D - "You do not have to say anything but it may harm your defence if you do not mention when questioned something you later rely on in court, anything you do say may be given in evidence." They can't extradite you for that yet, but if they ever join the EC ....

Meanwhile it would be prudent for David Cochrane to avoid Turkey on his holidays.

Find this rather odd as Turkey would be one of the USA's better friends in the East. Even though it has an Islamic population Turkey is a totally secular state, so to equate the country with Islamic terror is idiotic.

Actually the goverment in Turkey now is mildly Islamic the same way Fianna Fail down here is mildly Roman Catholic, but there is a long way from Brian Cowen to Francisco Franco and radical Islamicists are pretty rare and repressed in Turkey...Beer drinking is common there...Though youd be surprised how many Islamic countries BAN the Burqa.

Though they are a member of NATO since the end of the cold war their relationship with the USA has been getting frostier and frostier....They are closer to Putin now than Obamha.

- Turks also suffered many civilian losses from al-qaeda terror bombings.
- Turkey makes one of the most contribution to war against al-qaeda in Afghanistan, along with USA and UK under the flag of NATO.
- We totally don't deserve to see our flag next to terror, that can be anyone else but not Turks. Really unfair.

How come? We supported Putin against Georgia? No we exactly did the opposite.

Ok for those polls, Turkey always comes in the first or second line. And who is the other? Greece. It's just the reaction way of people in this part of the world.
Before Iraq war America was the most favourite country here (Clinton), and after 20 years it'll be the same probably.

Greetings Kerasus, I went through Turkey in 83 and 84 working for Afghans doing what at the time was called a Turkey run, bringing trucks to Pakistan.The hospitality was second to none. The only big problem was the underpaid police constantly shaking us down. One night we got into real problems with them and it was looking bad until a restaurant owner got on the blower and sent for the Army. Ten minutes later an officer and squad turns up,all I could think of was Billy Hayes and Midnight express.No one could speak each others language other than a few words of German,Loads of shouting and suddenly the officer said something and the cops faces dropped as they were forced to hand back our passports and apologise. The locals were delighted and started mocking the cops who slunk away off. The army then gave our convoy an escort out of the area while refusing to take anything from us other than a few ciggys we insisted they take.Your right to be proud of your army,class act from where I was standing.

They did. The flag of modern Turkey, while similar to the flag of the Ottoman Empire, is not an Islamic flag. There are various stories as to where the flag came from, including one or two which relate to Constantinople - before the Turks conquered it. At various times the colour of the flag has also been green - the colour of Islam.
