Just noticed this is on tonight, should be interesting!

In April 1920 Ireland was paralysed by a general strike and across the country workers' councils had taken over workplaces and urban areas. This documentary explores the events of a period when Ireland stood on the brink of a socialist revolution that would have changed the course of its history.
Its on tonight on TG4 at 8:40.

They really put RTE to shame.
And we were talking about the Abbey earlier today. Its incredible that TG4 only gets around the same amount as the Abbey gets, yet does infinitely more with it.

The Abbey gets around eight million, and TG4 about 30 million. But, when you think of the massive difference in achievement, you would think TG4 must be getting a couple of hundred million.

That was a great program. It really shows that there was no difference between British rulers and the Irish nationalists that replaced them, the choice for so many generations was the same, the freedom to starve or emigrate.
The British set up the native Irish landed oligarchy, and then handed the free state over to them. This oligarchy has kept Ireland a harmless backwater ever since.

I think RTE and TG4 should have their budgets switched around. Anyone else agree? RTE get hundreds of millions and mostly produce muck.

strange oligarchy considering so many small farmers owned their land .....
Right throughout the 19th century and into the first two decades of the 20th century most of the class conflict in this country centered around conflict between agricultural labourers and cottiers on one side and the tenant farmers on the other side (with occasional extension to conflict between tenant farmers and landlords). The tenant farmers rented land from the landlords and regularly rented it on to the labourers and cottiers for 4X + the rent they were paying for it. Conflict also regularly erupted when tenant farmers hoarded food supplies to drive up prices - causing consequent hardship for the poorest sections of society.

1808-1816 the Caravat V Shanvest conflict (labourers V tenant farmers)
1820-1824 Rockite Rebellion (primarily labourers V tenant farmers)
1825 Rockite Uprising (tenant farmers V landlords)
1831 Terry Alt uprising (labourers V tenant farmers)
1844-1850 continuous low-scale conflict between labourers and tenant farmers mostly over farmers hoarding food supplies and overcharging labourers for food
1870's Land War (tenant farmers V landlords)
1880's Land War (primarily labourers V tenant farmers - the first trade union for labourers was founded in Kanturk in 1879)
1919-1922 widespread conflict (strikes regularly involving violence) between labourers and farmers.
