What kind of resources do these guys have?

I'm sure they've plenty of old IRA heads and big drug lords to watch over.

But apart from all that, do they keep tabs on political extremists and potential subversives?

Would they even have the know-how? Maybe I'm being incredibly naive, but I'm thinking of some dusty office in Kilmainham, a couple of computers, Spar wrappers, tea bags and a hotline to Government Buildings and MI5 should something actually happen.

I guess we should thank God we live in peaceful times.

They just concern themselves with the RA don't they - I thought anything else would be under the remit of the Garda Special Branch - or am I being naive too?

I've heard of a few "Eircom" vans going round the place.

Oh and those Ford Mondeos with the aerials sticking up.

There is no such thing. There's an office which interacts with Europol and Interpol and oversees bribes for informers, largely within the dissident Republican community.
Their budget is I think around 700K a year all-in.
Basically, we have no secret service.

Ha ha - no G2 is a common code for the military intelligance department in western countries, G3 is supplies, G1 is something else - i may be open to correction.

What does one have to do to be eligible for a bribe?

700k? Do you need to put your life at risk to get a slice of that action?

Nah, it has to be:
- black
- filthy
- lots of aerials
- scraped to pieces
- ZX spectrum computer screwed into the dash
- no alloy wheels
- smell of cow manure on the inside
- 2.0L turbo, no badges
- have the sun blinds in the downward position at all times
- double-parked outside Spar on Westmoreland Street

On point one, go ask special branch.
I've no idea what you're talking about in relation to your second question, though. That money pays for running an office, a number of salaries (between 2 and 4, I believe), overheads and provides the bribe budget for the branch men.

I heard G2 is named after the number of employees in the organisation, and they only work Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

The are probably a little bigger than that, but the Irish Times published their budget a while back - around 1.5m a year and they only spend about half of it.
I think you are referring to the budget for our "secret service" which is run out of the Dept. of Justice.

G2 is military intelligence and is a separate institution altogether.

Nope. Goes back to the time of Collins.

Will the spook wing be subject to a 10% cut-back?

I mean Ford Mondeos! FFS!

Heh good move for an intelligence crew to portray that image... act as a magnet to mildly interested Gardai swanning around in the patrol car or never sleeping Neighbourhood Watch types :)

Should go for broke tho if that's the image they want to portray and maybe add;

An "I Shot JR" sticker on the rear window
Have the driver wearing as much bling as Mr T from the A Team
Invest in one of those purple undercarriage glow thingies
Stick a few Peace symbols on for good measure

It's an interesting organisation but I don't like talking about it. I seem to come across as a nutter.
