A gesture by real feminists, unlike the pusillanimous Swedes who kowtowed to the dreadful Iranian regime.
Incredibly, FIDE, the world chess governing body has allowed Iran to host the world championships and the mullahs have insisted that women don hijabs. This has led to some of the most prominent players boycotting the event. Not much coverage of this principled stance in the media.

FIDE Women's World Chess Championship 2017

As a chess player myself, albeit a poor one, I was disgusted when iran got the championships. As a rule tournaments should not go to repressive regimes like Iran for all kinds of reasons not just women's rights.

Wasn't chess invented in ancient Persia?

The ironing of it all.

Yes. When Persia/Iran was forward looking. A long long time ago. That is definitely not the case currently.

I doubt the Queen was as powerful :D
There was no Queen. I believe the Europeans changed the Vizier into a Queen as a mark of respect for Isabella of Castille for driving out the Muslims from Spain and helping to fight the Turks. :p

Your link does not seem to work?

Typical hateful introduction of standard feminist issues like being able to dress how you like at a chess tournament.

We defy you and your kind of hate Aristodemus.

We stand with the women who went to the chess tournament...somewhere at the back, segregated from the men, and monitored by the religious police.

Mick Mack: Its a free choice to wear the veil. Never forget that.
No it's compulsory. If it was a free choice she would still be on the team.
