Starbucks stiffing farmers in Ethiopia to the tune of $90 million a year says Oxfam

Starbucks has a challenge.
"They've been posting industry-leading same-store sales growth for the last five years while reducing labor costs - a trend that can't continue," said Howard Penney, an analyst at Hedgeye Risk Management, who follows Starbucks.
This lead to one Barista setting up an online petition and eventually meeting with the CEO. The workers were feeling pressed. Starbucks had increased wages, though it opposes $15 an hour, but it then reduced work hours. Its trying to automate ordering and its points system has had the side effect of hitting workers with reduced tips.

They also have a problem with Unions, and frequently end up in labour disputes. That report is from 2009.

But 6 years later it was the same story.
More than 200 baristas across the country responded to the survey that formed the basis of the report, which was released by the Center for Popular Democracy. About 25% of employees said they had been asked to close a store and open it the following morning, giving them little time to rest between shifts. Almost half said they received their schedule one week or less in advance, giving little time to plan for childcare or other needs. Two in five employees said they faced difficulties taking sick days.
Fortune Magazine has described the hiring initative as a Strong Response in a little side page video.

Starbucks gets to sell the idea that its a caring company, thought the evidence against it is there, and it probably gets to continue its strategy to control cost by cutting labour costs, and ensuring that workers with 'realistic expectations' get the signal that its a good place to work.

Enjoy your coffee, feel great, and be part of Starbucks cost consolidation and PR initiative.

Piss poor coffee, even for a generic yankee chain. Spend your money in Butlers, 3FE, Coffee Angel or your local café. Ireland first and all.

But that would mean they were not high minded heroes of The Resistance.

Came through Dubai airport yesterday and saw people lining up to buy Starbucks. We have 3 in Dun Laoghaire, can never see the attraction, its not the worst coffee I have tasted but its way overpriced.

Off and drink an overpriced Low Foam Extra Cream Caffeine Free Fair Trade Crappacino and save the world or something, there's a good little lib.
I knew you couldn't bring yourself to add those four letters at the end.

(Also, in a revelation that will surprise absolutely nobody, I only like black coffee.)

Much nicer coffee on offer from Irish cafés try 3FE or Urbanity of Smithfield, where they roast on site. You can get a beautiful double espresso there.

Let your argument stand on its merits...by all means call someone a cúnt, but not lefty lib, libtard, snowflake...
Fair enough SiL but there's been enough similar abuse of the "other side" up and including "Nazis".

Eventually it wears you down and you foolishly sink to that level.

C'mon BB, none of this nonsense.....I've no time for Starbucks at all but let's focus on the real issue which is the megalomaniac homophobe, misogynist, islamaphobe and racist not to mention tax evader in the White House.

By the way, any Irish person who drinks coffee instead of tea, should be deported.
