Government to pay for couples to have IVF treatment

The Government will today commit to funding IVF treatment for couples unable to conceive from 2019.

Minister for Health Simon Harris is to bring a memo to Cabinet this morning outlining proposed regulatory measures for the area of assisted human reproduction.

Speaking on his way into the Cabinet meeting on Tuesday morning, Mr Harris said that by the end of the year he wants to clarify for families what financial assistance would be available for IVF from 2019.

“I made it very clear that I want to put in place supports to help subsidise the cost of IVF for families,” Mr Harris said.
Being discussed on LIVELINE ..

On the for side is It is a very expensive ongoing proceedure and rightly so, the state should pay for this.

On the against side - if you cannot afford the IVF can you afford to bring that child up

( arguments on liveline )

Me - Im just not sure purely from the cost to the taxpayer / state because its a very costly proceedure that might need countless trys @ €5k to €10k + a go. I suppose you could argue its a bet on taxpayers of the future, thats the return?

And could it be abused? Ah shur its other peoples money paying for it so yi hay .. because you are not paying for something changes a mindset

So what do y'all think?

Jesus H, there are more important things for money to be spent on than IVF. This is not OK.

Disgraceful decision but this is a sense of entitlement state where everyone expects everyone else to pay for everything.

Harris is a born sh1t.
Taxpayers are now being forced to pay so that infertile couples may or may not conceive.

This is very very wrong.

The next Q of course is IF state will now be paying for this .. How many goes will be allowed? Will there be a differentiation here for those working vs those on live reg / dole / med cards?

In the NHS they offer 3 cycles, 3 bouts of this

This will send the wing nuts up the wall.

On the one hand they're at pains to tell us the white man is doomed, we are being out bred by the darkies and we must take action!

Action is taken and they still bitch.

Which is it lads action or inaction?

IVF, free GP visits for all children, paying for fat folk to have a part of their stomachs removed....does Simon Harris know about an imminent discovery of oil off the west coast or something?

The Western World is creating a generation of people who will suffer a lot from physical and mental health as the age of mothers and fathers increases.

Joe says "Overwhelming feeling of all callers and contributors etc on LIVELINE is that the state SHOULD pay for IVF"

That's because all those callers are infertile.

The overwhelming listenership for mid afternoon programs are housewives and dole heads, so no surprise there.

I actually don't object in principle, but the fact of the matter is that the health service works with limited resources and spending on a non life threatening condition like infertility seems wrong when we leave people to suffer with debilitating ilnesses and plead poverty as an excuse for doing so.

No surprise in this.

Most right wing parties around the world do all of the above.

This is to counteract the loss of votes expected after the referendum on the 8th amendment.
