Fresh reports of a Syrian troop buildup along Lebanon's eastern Beka'a Valley are ringing alarm bells in Beirut and Washington.

Quoting Lebanese security sources, the Arab daily al-Hayat, reports the Syrian army has deployed tanks to the Beka'a Valley border town of al-Qa'a. Eyewitnesses also report that the Syrian Army has dug trenches and erected earthen barriers.

The bstrds are digging trenches. Nuke them now before its too late.

Or at least make them fill in those Trenches of Mass Deception.

FFS, the Syrians are wise to take (futile) defensive steps against an Israeli October surprise.

Could this be designed to help McCain? Or is that being too cynical? ;)

Not sure they is anything to this bar some muscle stretching and a bit off 'I am goina get ya suckker' by Syria, I would be far more worried about unrest spreading in the China banks protests.
PS or indeed if Stev Hawking's is right about his doomsday talk on CNN this evening.

If Syria wants a McCain admin that will be a great deal tougher on them than Obama, then they are going the right way about it.

What are you on about? This story concerns a Syrian build up on the Lebanese border - not a Jew in sight.

Recent 'terrorist' related activity inside Syria points to Assads precarious balance between pandering to Shia and then Sunni extremists may be coming apart. Does Syria expect a backlash from Hezzbollah if it is preparing to loosen ties with Iran?

I was talking to a Lebanonese couple in Tanzania a few weeks ago, who were sure there was going to be a War in Lebanon in October. Now I was pretty sceptical at the time, but maybe they were right.

But again, why? Sheba farms is the only region disputed between the two nations. Hardly worth coming to blows over that as Israel is still occupying that few square miles of dust. If they are building defensive positions they are expecting an attack, unless they are securing their border in expecation that lebanon is about to decend into civil war again (?).

There are plenty of hawks in the israeli military who want to destroy Hezbollah and get permanent access to Lebanese water resources.

Also, the whole of southern lebanon was part of the biblical israel and they want it back.

Of course Israel wants to destroy Hezbollah. However they tried that only a few years ago and it failed and Hezbollah aren't even attacking Israel in any major way now.

Second Israel has no interest in Southern Lebanon. They tried to control that as well and that failed and they only withdrew a few years ago and not in a million years would Israel put itself in that terrible position again.

I absolutely agree it would be stupid - but I think the Israels are currently led by stupid people.

Lebanon seems to be the punching bag of both Syria and Israel..
Stick a few thousand EU troops on both borders, along with a SLBM-slinging French sub off the coast to scare them.

That'll sort out the ********************s.

No they are led by people who are arguing for some sort of peace. Now if Nethanyahu gets in there will be no peace.

The situation is Lebanon is quite complicated with many players both internal and external vying for power.

At the moment the most potent threat to stability is in the north as both Syria and Saudi Arabia use locals as pawns on the chessboard to gain and wield influence.

'Recent violence - assassinations and explosions - not necessarily interrelated, reflect a battle between competing intelligence agencies and radical movements, all serving different masters and different motives from all friends and foes of Lebanon.

The lack of political will and a national security vision in Beirut opens the door for this anarchy, a state that no Lebanese faction values its sovereignty and a central government that continues a tradition of disregarding the north and south of the country.

What emerges from all this is a lethal chess game being played out on Lebanese soil.'
