Taiwanese same-sex couples have the right to legally marry high court rules, 1st landmark ruling in Asia

History! The South China Morning Post reports:

Taiwan’s top court, the Council of Grand Justices, ruled in favour of gay marriage on Wednesday, the first landmark ruling in Asia on same-sex unions. The ruling by a panel of 14 grand justices in Taipei said the current law that bars same-sex marriage is a violation of the constitution – making the island the first place in Asia to legalise gay unions. LGBT right groups are holding a rally near the legislature building in support of marriage equality which is expected to continue until 8pm. Opponents are expected to respond to the ruling shortly

My Comments:
1) yeah I know some of you will moan it's only going to happen because of the court ruling but its good news

2) it was a decisive 10-3 decision (out of 14 Grand Justices, it appears that two dissented and one recused)

3) the ruling also appears to write sexual orientation protections into the Taiwanese constitution

Nice to see this happening in Taiwan, and shows that the de facto independence Taiwan enjoys means its citizens truly do have freedoms which Chinese citizens do not.

An excellent example to China and other countries in the region.
