I'd say a lot of Labour's poor performance is due to the low quality of their candidate.

Congrats Pearse, very impressive campaign and by far the best candidate.

Both Labour and FG put out very weak candidates so not too surprising.

Sickening that 20% would still vote for FF.

In the GE2011 it seems to me that FF would get the 3rd seat.

No hope for this country when FF manage to get that much of the vote.
Fair play to SF.

Polls were saying Labour would get 14%, but they've only managed 10.4. By that logic, with 27% in the latest RedC they'd be on for 20-21% for the GE.

Question would be, will Labour put up another candidate in the GE or stay with McBrearty? Very poor candidate in my opinion.

+1

It's hard to do well when one candidate siphons off nearly 40% of the vote.
Labour had no base here and got less than 3% in the GE so on that basis 10% is a success. You can't just put a Labour badge on someone and assume people will vote for them. It's a reminder of the work that Labour will have to do in constituencies that traditionally have not been supportive of Labour candidates.

Do you not think Labour's performance is surprising? I would have thought Labour would have done better.
Labour has always been weak in rural areas. I think when it comes to the generals they will make gains in Dublin, and maybe Cork, but it will be FG will pick up extra seats in rural areas not Labour.
