Taoiseach to continue with reform precedent in Seanad appointees?

In 2011 FG Taoiseach Enda Kenny took the unprecedented step of appointing 5 independent people to the Seanad, something he was roundly applauded for.

Those 5 Senators proved largely a success (imo). He had also appointed 3 FG politicians and 3 Labour politicians at that time.

Is he now honour bound to continue with this precedent?

Or will see a ferocious return to crony appointees ....

What would P.ie urge Mr Kenny to do?

I would urge him to burn down the senate with all members inside and allow us forget the idiotic charade while actually getting on with something even vaguely useful or interesting.

He wanted rid of it - so pack it full of his supporters/TDs who lost their seats and then sit back watch the inevitable outrage and wait back and say - well this is what you wanted you voted to keep it - deal with it!

"Largely a success", are you barking mad?

The five he nominated are listed below, independent my backside.
2011
Eamonn Coghlan (Ind) - barking mad and FG
Fiach Mac Conghail (Ind) (FF)- well connect and one of the Bull's men - Mac Conghail was a special adviser to the Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism John O'Donoghue from 2002 to 2005. In 2005, he was appointed as Director of the Abbey Theatre.
Martin McAleese (Ind) (FF)resigned in 2013 and replaced by Hildegarde Naughton (FG)
Mary Ann O'Brien (Ind) (Blueshirt genepool later one of Lucy's loonies)
Marie-Louise O'Donnell (Ind) Blueshirt better know to the habituees of the VINB thread as MOLD, where her performances leave no doubt of where her political loyalties lie. Snout at a number of troughs for years.
Jillian van Turnhout (Ind)
Katherine Zappone (Ind) "labour" until she deemed it more expedient to stand as an "independent" for the GE, could not wait to get a prime spot at the trough, joined Lowry to prop up the village idiot.

If that is you regard that worthless, and in some cases bordering on the lunatic shower as "largely a success", I would hate to see what you consider losers.

"Independent" was the most amiable way to designate yourself in February's general election but, right on cue, there was a flurry of them looking for a well-upholstered seat in the Senate. Among those defining themselves as "Independent" was the somewhat coy offspring of President Michael D. and Sabina. As all the political parties are hated with a vengeance it is a sign of innate cunning to conceal your ideological roots in Mireland to avoid the scrutiny of the muck-spreaders.

Kenny should appoint all FG'ers. Why not. Where did his reforming appointments get him? After all the people voted for the retention of this undemocratic dumping ground for failed candidates.

Nobody could blame Kenny if he stuffed a load of FG election candidates in there. People voted for it.

The powers of the Seanad are;

The main function of Seanad Éireann is in relation to legislation. A Bill may start life in either the Dáil or the Seanad. In practice, the vast majority of Bills originate from the Government and are passed by the Dáil first. They are then sent to the Seanad for debate and consideration. Within 90 days, the Seanad may propose amendments, reject or pass a Bill. The Dáil has the power to over-ride the Seanad's rejection of a Bill.

The Seanad's powers in relation to Bills for Government spending (Money Bills) are very restricted. These Bills cannot start life in the Seanad, they must come from the Dáil. The Seanad has only 21 days to consider a Money Bill and cannot make amendments to it.
Those powers should be given to the President (M.D. won't be there forever) and the Seanad disbanded.

In 2002 Bertie nominated 11 people to the Seanad, in the 2007 GE, 4 of his nominees was elected as TD's, Bertie nominated 4 new senators to replace the 4 he had nominated in 02 and who had been elected TD's in the 07 GE, was that not cronyism, don't know if they got paid or ever sat in the senate. So in that case EK could have nominated some one to replace Catherine Zappone.

Jody Corcoran had an interesting article whereby he claimed that Kenny was not going to budge on Seanad nominations as a red line, no buddies from his government partners and concluded that he's going to stuff the seanad with a view to his legacy and shaping FG after he steps down. We'll see soon enough.
