After an Oireachteas Committee voted down Senator John Crown's motion for a proposed smoking ban in the grounds of Leinster House, the Senator said he was disappointed in the outcome.
But what made me laugh was the following excuse from Fianna Fail's spokesman on health Billy Kelleher.
Who was more worried that TD'S could get the sh!te kicked out of them on the street! (Maybe he's Right:))

Responding to the motion, Fianna Fáil spokesman on health Billy Kelleher said while efforts should be made to discourage people from smoking, other health factors needed to be considered.

“It could be dangerous to some member’s health to go outside the gates and have a cigarette because they’d have people outside there waiting for them at particular times when governments inevitably get unpopular,” he said.

“If people are afraid to go out in the street and have a cigarette because they will face the wrath of an inflamed electorate, stop smoking”, Prof Crown responded.

Nanny state rules are for the plebs outside the gate and not for the lords and masters.

Lets all sign a petition to ban smoking in the grounds of Leinster House. The headlines would read - 67 TD's waiting on trollies in the Mater Hosp. Major reforms to take place in Health care. The Minister for Health announced today, from his Hospital trolley, that all peasants would have to vacate their Hospital beds so that the great and the good representatives of this country could recuperate in comfort. VHI premiums will treble in cost in order to prevent the riff raff from contaminating such greatness and this increase in revenue will be used to fund michelin star restaurants and spas in each private Hospital...................................................................................

Dispite being a part time smoker for nearly 25 years I am, and always have been, a strong supporter of the smoking ban. I do think that site bans are a bit over the top, but I'm not pushed either way. To be honest, I don't see any reason why smokers can't learn not to smoke during the working day.
But seriously lads, even accepting that site bans are in place in some places and that some people don't seem to be able to go even a few hours without a puff, do we really want to see images of our TDs smoking outside a side gate. It'd be tatty enough looking, to be honest.

A case of TDs leading from the back again. In the budget we can expect an increase on excise on tobacco which the government will claim is for health reasons, to persuade people to stop smoking.

When a proposal is made that would make it more difficult for them to enjoy a cigarette they politely decline.

So even after the budget our €90,000 plus paid TDs can go on enjoying a puff while less well paid members of society will have to give up, cut down or turn to the black market.

Finian McGrath was on Newstalk earlier and he was almost apoplectic. He portrayed it as Crown being an anti-smoking Nazi who was persecuting people like himself who only had a few refuges in Leinster House.

Fair play to Crown for getting under McGrath's skin.

Anti-Smoking Nazis like Crown want to take away our freedom to make choices they disagree with. It's a slippery slope indeed.

TDs should represent and be drawn from smokers as well as non smokers. This ensures at least a measure of balance when debating smoking related legislation.

Surprising what upsets them and what doesn't, isn't it?
