TDs native to constituency

A few recent threads have been about localism, and it struck me one indicator of interest is the extent to which TDs represent constituencies in counties other than their place of birth. By the wonders of google and wikipedia, I've tried to identify the birthplaces of TDs elected in 2007. At this stage, I'm more interested in hearing if I've any of them down wrong, and if anyone can fill in some of the ones where I could find no information.

I'd say few surprises in this early cut of the data. A fair number of TDs representing Dublin and surrounding constituencies come from elsewhere. As much as anything, that might just reflect folk migrating to Dublin and becoming active in a party as a means of socialisation. I'd say it likely doesn't have much impact on their political behaviour (with the possible exception of Aine Brady. But it may contribute to the lack of any real 'Dublin' lobby in Irish politics, and explain an amount of the bias towards the regions in political debate.

I suppose the other question folk might be interested in is which counties are the most 'incestuous'. The areas with no non-native TDs seem to be Clare, Cork, Donegal, Kerry, Longford-Westmeath, Mayo, Waterford and Wexford - although I don't have information on all Cork TDs.

The (rather lengthy) table is below. Any corrections would be most welcome.

Seán Fleming is from Laois.
Thomas Byrne is from Meath or Louth, nearly sure it's Meath.
Almost 100% sure Cyp Brady is a Dub.

Yep - I recall his brother, motor-mouth Royston, going on about his East Wall childhood in those halcyon days when he was running for Europe and was one of Bertie's best buddies!

Think you're right re Seán Fleming - Castletown, Laois.
John Moloney is Mountmellick - with a pub and undertaker's business owned by his late father.

Smashing. The pub and the undertaker. That's pretty much a town sewn up.

Irish people will always drink and Irish people will always die.

How many Irish towns replicate this drink-death monopoly ?

Many I suspect.

Yes correct although I have a small question mark over Frank Feighan. His parents are from Tubbercurry in Sligo and he lives very close to the border currently, so I'm not 100% sure if he was born in Roscommon although he did spend most of his childhood there.

Liz McManus I believe, while yes she is form Canada, was brought up in Galway, though I can't be sure. In relation to PJ SHeahan (CSW) and Michael McGrath (CSC) I would wager both are from Cork, they both have common Cork names, and Sheahan is ancient.

I'm not trying to be critical, but I don't understand that point of the thread. If a T.D. was born in Galway but represents Dublin, because he lives & works there, what is the problem. Again, I am not trying to criticise, but what am I missing??

Because Irish voters are very parochial, so it's interesting (to some people) to see where they hark back to. This poster went to the effort of putting all that info together, say thank you!

I think it is Louth. Isn't his father a former Louth county councillor and auctioneer in Drogheda.

Not that it matters much as Drogheda is on the border with Meath East.

He's a Louth man originally but moved into Meath. His father is still on the council. Was co-opted when O'Carroll got into the Senate.

Thanks to all for the comments. I'll try to knock up a revised list - and even see if I can fill in the remaining gaps, by seeing if I can google where they went to school or whatever. Some of the blanks I can probably guess - for example, I agree that Cyprian Brady can be assumed to have been born in Dublin, I just didn't have a positive confirmation from the material I'd googled.

Maybe there is no point whatsoever. It just struck me as an interesting thing to investigate, to see what pops up. You'd be right to say that, in any individual case, it may make no difference whatsoever. For example, Eamon O'Cuiv is born in Dublin, but probably one of the most dedicated advocates of rural interests. On the other hand, I've linked a thread where I very clearly documented where Aine Brady chose to advocate the corner of her native region. And it wasn't that she was taking a national line. She was being parochial - but for her native region, not the place that actually gave her a seat.

Once I've a complete list, I'd intend playing with the figures to see what patterns emerge. Maybe those patterns will be irrelevant. I'm really just pullling this material together to see if it does tell us anything interesting.

As long as they don't try to claim expenses from where they were born I'm ok.

A thread here (http://www.politics.ie/elections/150233-country-county.html) reminded me that I’d never got around to finishing this little study. Just to stress, I’m only taking TDs native to constituencies as an indicator of the extent to which politics are local. Earlier reaction to the thread suggest some see a point to this analysis, and other not. That’s fair enough – I’m just presenting the information. People can draw from it what they will.

My final list of TDs and their place of birth is below. The info for some isn’t cast-iron (For some I had to guess based on where they went to school, or where their father was from, so please do post a correction if you spot an error.)

I’ll post my analysis in a second post in just a moment.

On general points. Cork, Donegal, Roscommon and Waterford come out as the most ‘homogenous’, if that’s the right word. What I mean is these counties have no non-native TDs, nor is anyone from those counties a TD in any other county.

Clare, Kerry, Longford, Westmeath, Mayo, Sligo and Wexford, have no non-native TDs, but people from those counties have won seats in other parts of the country.

The most ‘cosmopolitan’ constituency is Kildare North, where no TDs are native to county.

As might be guess, the largest concentration of non-native TDs is Dublin; there are 16 non-native TDs out of 47 seats, leaving 31 native Dublin TDs. The traffic is not all one-way, though. Three Dublin natives represent non-Dublin constituencies. Overall, while Dublin has 28% of seats, only 20% of TDs are Dublin natives (and clearly less than 20% are Dublin natives in Dublin constituencies.)

The count of TDs by birthplace is:

Dublin 34
Cork 19
Galway 12
Mayo 9
Limerick 8
Kerry 7
Tipperary 7
Clare 6
Donegal 6
Wexford 6
Wicklow 6
Meath 5
Sligo 4
Waterford 4
Westmeath 4
Outside Ireland 3
Kildare 3
Kilkenny 3
Laois 3
Louth 3
Monaghan 3
Offaly 3
Roscommon 3
Cavan 2
Longford 2
Carlow 1
Total 166

Anyway, that’s this Dail analysed, just as its coming to an end.
