I thought this blog post by an American mother to be worth reading.

She is responding to the revolting Steubenville OH rape of an inebriated 16-year old girl multiple times by a group of young men at a drinking party. The rapes were filmed and posted on social media. The girl was urinated on. Two young men brought the helplessly drunken girl to another party where she could be raped again.

The woman's response is also to media "regret" that "two young men's lives have been ruined", referring to the two who were jailed for the rape.

[As I grew up] Parents, teachers, media, all told me I had to be careful not to get raped. Because I was a girl. And the responsibility was on me.

I’m so fcking sick of it.

The fate of Nicola Furlong in Japan also raises the question: where do young men get the notion that rape is a casual act with no consequences ....

Maybe we could teach our kids not to murder or steal as well, then those crimes would vanish too.

Parents don't need to teach their sons not to rape.

They need to teach them to respect other people in all respects and to treat others with dignity.

The 'not raping' bit will follow automatically

Pornography, and its proliferation on the internet, is a contributing factor.

And you can quote a dozen studies that have found no connection between the two, it doesn't matter. Women are being objectified today in ways that they never were before, even in times when their rights were few and far between.

Rape is a crime of hate with sexual overtones, not the reverse.

Which young men are these? Would it happen to be the small minority who actually carry out these awful crimes as opposed to the majority of male population who would be as disgusted as anyone with these acts? Generalisations help nobody as you well know.

And how did you even come to the conclusion that even a rapist assumes that rape is a casual act with no consequences? I've never heard such a thing.

Women are as likely (or more likely) to rape as men are, and men are as likely (or more likely) to be victims of rape as women are.

We need to teach our sons that it is OK to be male, that maleness is not inherently bad and can actually *shock* have positive features.

Sexual and domestic abuse is not gendered. Unlike violence in general, which is overwhelmingly inflicted on men.

The Steubenville case and the attitudes it has exposed are horrific though.

And you can quote a dozen studies that have found no connection between the two, it doesn't matter.
Actually if I recall correctly pornography correlates with a decline in sexual violence. It provides sexual release.

what an fantastic insight to nothing
Rapists in the making carrying an unconcious girl around for portable raping at parties, they do a year in prison then they are out to go on to bigger and better. If your that morally corrupt at 16 , you're only going to get worse. These are monsters in the making, they are fit for nothing good.

When was growing up in the 80s, I can honestly say I never heard a rape related joke .... and I went to an all boys school where nothing was off limits. From working with people in their early 20s, I was genuinely shocked to the extent to how they've gained currency. It was just something that wasn't even on the radar in my day.

They may well learn how to be worse rapists inside. Cant see how these people will ever get better.
Too be honest I doubt they are predatory rapists. I think given American fraternity and college culture they took advantage of a vulnerable young woman in a group. I remember alot of the American fraternity students I met were ******************************************s and full of themselves.

They are just acting out what they see on porn. If girls consent to getting drunk and hanging around with these type of people, what do they really expect to happen ?

Pornography, the removal of the moral and human content from sex, the trivialization of emotion, the objectivization of women, the commercializtion of one of the most meaningful parts of human life.....
