ST JAMES’S HOSPITAL has moved to reassure patients and their families that no disruption to services is anticipated tomorrow, when a planned picket by members of the Technical Engineering and Electrical Union (TEEU) is expected to take place.
There is more

The TEEU say that the four electricians were suspended after they locked electrical panels in order to prevent unqualified people from accessing them, and electricians at the south Dublin hospital say they are being ‘punished’ by hospital management.
There is more

Anyone know what gives here? Only a couple of guys out the front and folk are walking past, not paying them a blind bit of notice.

That dispute goes back a while, I think, lots of tension there.

Fire alarm maintenance was previously a demarcation problem too....

The TEEU said the workers objected to this because
· Electricians at the hospital have always maintained and carried out activities involving Fire Alarms and are the appropriately qualified people to do so
· The normal dispute resolution procedures, including involvement of third parties, have not been exhausted
· Unilateral dilution of the role of TEEU members at the hospital will open the door to the transfer of other work and duties.

In this case, strike notice was served last week, the quote you give was from the 18th:

Essentially, it appears that the TEEU staff locked up access to sub boards, control panels and other equipment to prevent outside contractors carrying out tasks that the TEEU claim are their's alone.

Was away on hols last week so only saw the strikers yesterday morning.

In theory, shouldn't outside contractors also be TEEU members too?

Why?

They are not employed by the hospital.

TEEU is a fairly large union. Most electricians in the industry that I've worked with are members and there's rarely a problem on a site if a third part electrical company start opening panels as long as they have union cards.
