The "Affordable" Housing Scheme

In reference to this article:

Dún Laoghaire Sinn Féin’s Michael Nolan has described the County Councils first venture in to the area of affordable housing as a “sick joke” saying it will do nothing to assist those most in need of housing.

Mr. Nolan said, “Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council has one of the worst records in providing social housing in the country and to add insult to injury they have now launched a scheme of so-called affordable housing with prices ranging from €200,000 to €345,000. For whom are these properties ‘affordable’? Certainly not the thousands of people who make up the Councils chronic housing list.

“It is clear from this scheme that the Councils housing policies are still being dictated by the market. €345,000 is already the average cost of a three bed-roomed house in the capital. A so-called €50,0000 reduction on the cost of an apartment that is already excessively overpriced and out of the reach of most people is meaningless.

“I have no doubt that this scheme will be oversubscribed and the Council will hale it as a great success but the reality is that it will only be a reflection of the desperation of many, many people in Dún Laoghaire Rathdown to own a home in the community they come from.

“This scheme will not prevent people over stretching themselves in terms of mortgage repayments. It will not address the chronic shortage of social housing in Dun Laoghaire Rathdown Down and will not help in reducing over all costs of housing in the county. It is nothing more than a sick joke and an excuse for a council that has singularly failed in meeting the housing needs of its people.”

This is yet more pandering to the wealthy, and an insult to the thousands of homeless on the streets of Dublin, the young couples who cannot afford to get on the property ladder and the young families who are stuck in sub-standard Council housing. €50,000 off is disgusting.

House values are based on greed, if we were to take away the profits
made by developers and moneylenders we would see a reduction in
costs by up to 66%,
If we do have a lower price on property landlords will no longer control
the Property Market place.at present tenants pay the landlord for
looking after his investment, if you pay for something it should belong
to you. when you pay rent you are paying the landlords financial
responsibilities, this is one of the greatest crimes against humanity
along with the activities of moneylenders, not much can be done to
change things, because most of our politicians and people in positions of power are landlords or moneylenders, so one should expect they will always look after number one,

Why is the Market not providing housing people can afford?

How long would it take someone to save 20% of €345k and pay rent as well in the current high tax Ireland.

The State is propping up the price of property.
