I was just watching the BBC series Pop Goes Northern Ireland which is a sort of reeling in the years featuring selected years and concentrating on the troubles.
The most recent year featured was the highly eventful year of 1981.
The assassination of Reverend Robert Bradford by PIRA at his constituency clinic and also the murder of his caretaker was highlighted and it seemed to be even bigger for the PUL Community than the death of Robert Sands MP had on the CNR Community!
Why was he targeted in particular - was it clearly to stoke up sectarian tension/ an easy political target/revenge in some way for the loss of Robert Sands MP.
He was ultimately replaced by the absolute beaut, Martin Smyth as an MP for South Belfast!
Paisley was well on his high horse over this and it was arranged for NI Secretary, James 'the wet' Prior to get considerable abuse in the wake of the MPs killing, almost as if he was regarded as a fellow traveller!
It seems to have been one of the most highly provocative events of the troubles!

He himself was a generator of sectarianism, is the killing of a generator of sectarianism a sectarian act designed to inflame sectarianism?

The sectarianism was already there.

Several Unionist MP's have named unconvicted people under parliamentary privilege who were subsequently murdered by crown forces or their paid mercenaries in loyalist murder gangs, karma is a biatch.

I always thought that targetting Unionist representitives showed up the futility of the IRA's campaign - on one hand promising Unionists respect and consideration of their views and on the other killing the people they elected to express them. Edgar Graham's murder was particularly brutal.

Well yes, that is how sectarianism, (or at least the tit for tat bloodlust involved here), works.

What appears to side A as the removal of a source of side B's sectarianism, appears to side B as further evidence of side A's sectarianism...which they of course think has to be dealt with by removing what they see as the generator of side A's sectarianism...and so on it goes.

Both sides think the sectarianism was already there and caused by the other side, but are oblivious to their own role in generating, inflaming and maintaining it.

Stepping back and breaking the cycle is the only solution. That's not easy, but thankfully, and to their credit, that is what the protagonists in the North managed to do eventually

When you make such a statement, don't you think you should support it by providing a link?

Well the Bradford killing must rattle them. If memory serves me, just prior to his assassination Bradford was making a lot of noise about Kincora. Dogs on the street said he was going to start naming names. The IRA had cause to target him, but no more than any other sectarian unionist politician. Think there was also the small matter of the hit team not shooting his RUC bodyguard. But maybe I've misremembered.

If you have new information regarding historical activities of possible state actors that may have been deployed in the province, I would urge you to pass that information to the PSNI, or the relevant police service in your jurisdiction.

You should do this as a matter of urgency.

very fair of IRA/SF not to kill his police bodyguard, but that poor caretaker ??? All gives lie to fact that IRA were not sectarian, same with killing of Edgar Graham. Also shown in that programme was the IRA killing of Strongs and the destruction nd arson of Tynan Abbey.

And your bosses will sift through the details to hide away all evidence about State murder and promote any they might find that link to Republicans.

Same old story

The circumstances of his murder strongly suggest collusion between the PIRA who would have wanted to kill him anyway and the British Deep State; the way those supposedly there to protect him suddenly were not around; a lot of Loyalists believe that he was set up to be killed because he was going to expose the way Freemasons were using a children's home in Ulster their private brothel (some of what went on there later came out- google Kincora)....But Im sure that in your mind it was really the glue sniffers of the INLA who killed Airey Neave.

Actually I blame both the PIRA and the British Deep State.

Riddle me this....Do you not think that the "Brits" colluded with elements in the PIRA in the case of the Loughgall massacre?
