Documentary on TV tonight (November 30th) on the election campaign in London earlier this year.

True Stories: The Battle for Barking, 10pm, More4, tonight
The Battle for Barking - Channel 4
Long-standing Labour MP Margaret Hodge is a stalwart of the New Labour establishment. Running against her is Nick Griffin, the British National Party leader. Griffin is a controversial figure, with a conviction for inciting racial hatred, who nonetheless commands considerable support.

Good shout, I saw this in the TV guide on Sunday and made a mental note.

There are some good docu's on BBC these days - did anyone see the JFK one two weeks ago? I unfortunately was stuck with Any Human Heart on C4, but it looked good (AHH is actually watchable in fairness).

This isn't actually a BBC documentary. It's an independent film maker with Channel Four.

The BBC seem to have a limited number of documentaries on current politics, using the half hour Panorama for what little they do. I agree they are good on history etc though.

(Although they have never explained their Building Seven announcement on 9/11. That deserves a documentary of its own.)

This is actually quite a sympathetic portrait of the BNP activists in Barking. I find myself warming to them as people.

Loved the bit where she was on a building site and had to put on wellies. When she took her feet out of her shoes, the camera zoomed in to show she was wearing Jimmy Choo shoes. That's the problem with Labour. They no longer understand what working people are going through.

The only white people in the programme that were not mentally ill were the BNPer's.

yeah, is that why her families steel company had links to fascist south American dictatorships.

Shes a fraud like all champagne socialists.

She never did much to help those poor children in Islington, did she.

wiki
The Evening Standard then began reporting on the allegations of abuse in Islingtons children's homes, shortly after which Hodge resigned to pursue a career with Price Waterhouse. In 1995, the White Report into sexual abuse in Islington Care homes reported that the council had failed adequately to investigate the allegations.[citation needed]

During her 10 years as leader of Islington Council she was referred to as "Enver Hodge", after the Albanian despot, Enver Hoxha

Thank God, I wasn't the only one so.

I appreciate that there would be a veneer of respectability put forward for the cameras, but the most moving scene was the one where the BNP guy lost his relation in Afghanistan, and broke down in front of the cameras.

I'd have no time for Hodge, to be honest (less time for Griffin).

Unfortunatley, when mainstream political parties wont listen to the concerns of citizens over issues like culture and identity, mass immigration leading to lowering of terms and conditions of employment, dismissing such concerns as rascist, then people will be drawn to more extreme political groups. Its all very well for the chattering classes in Islington or D4 with their kids inm private schools, top private health insurance, six figure salaries, blathering on about multiculturalism because influx of non nationals/refugees etc has no negative impact on their life.I personally dont like the idea of being told i cant wear a crucifix at work, see Christmas renamed festival of light etc like what has happened in the UK.This is a white, christian, european country.Multicultural societies have NO cultural identity.Eg The United States, whats their contribution to the world?rap music?mindless Hollywood trash?the cult of celebrity?corporate management speak?refering to personnel departments as human resources, sounds like the name of a family planning clinic.Oh no!have to go now the anti nazi fascist direct action group are massing outside waving the "oul Palestinian flags...

Two different brands of the right battling it out :D

Seriously though, it was a very good programme as it a gave a unique insight into the BNP and while I'm very far from agreeing with the BNP they no longer seem like an ideological boogeyman to me.

Fair play to you for admitting that at least. BNP are far more complex a beast than is portrayed in the Guardian. A lot of their support is based on genuine despair at the way their communities have been treated by New Labour.

BTW, I would not vote for either of them but if push came to shove I think old nick might get the stroke!
