The Budget! Will politicians take a percentage cut to pay prorata with the cuts they hand out?

Budget day is fast approaching, and the prebugdget speculation has been somewhat suppressed by the Galway Tragedy.

The Governent are targeting an adjustment of some €3.5 billion. The Government parties will insist the cuts and revenue raising methods are unavoidable. The opposition will partake in the usuall theatrics, describing the budget as savage, uncaring, misguided and insist that there were real less painful alternatives.

The left will talk about a lost opportunity insisting taxing the rich could solve our problems coupled with a massive stimulus package.

What are the odds of a prorata cut to politicians pay and expenses if there are cuts to social welfare program's?

Of course we already have Sinn Fein politicians claiming to live on some measure of an average income. They never admit that they take full whack from the taxpayer, ensuring there is no advantage for the exchequer.

It is not likely that a single opposition T.D will volunteer to forego any of their salary. There will be lots of crocodile tears.

What are the odds of an Taoiseach pushing another pay cut?

Implementing a cut to politicians pay just might be on the cards!

TDs, Senators and Ministers have already taken pay cuts of 15-20% of their pay and expenses. In percentage terms, this is far bigger than any pay or welfare cut inflicted on any other public servants or rates of social welfare.

So by your bizarre logic, maybe they should get a pay increase, to bring themselves in line with the actual cuts that have been inflicted?

Bertie and his merry men had inflated the politicians pay to fatten their pension take. Their salary levels were not realistic!

Can't see the problem, aren't they always saying they didn't go in to politics for the money , but to make a difference! Another little nugget they spin on us, is they could earn more in the private sector , so they can move if they're Not happy!

Ministers pay and expenses will be cut as will TDs pay and expenses.

There isn`t one TD in Dail Eireann that could argue if pay & expenses were cut by 30%.

And if they did complain :)

Again, you're just not correct. Yes, pay and pensions of politicians increased by large margins under Bertie Ahern. But social welfare increased at astronomical rates during this period. The old age pension, for example, more than doubled during his tenure. The winter fuel allowance, more than doubled and was increasing even as the crash was underway.

Did politicans salaries double during this period? No. But why should that stop anyone going on a mad irrational and ill-informed rant regardless?

I'd be happy if they removed the uplift for being a Minister and Taoiseach / Tanaiste. And if the expense policy was for vouched expenses only, in line with every job the unwashed taxpayers have.

It should be an honour to serve at cabinet.

And if you need that number of advisors, you are not qualified to do the job....

The leaders allowance for independents should be scrapped immediately, ie tomorrow.

Have any volunteered to give it up ?

Read in the SF Budget 2013 that Mehole MARTIAN gets a €9,000 pa allowance as leader of Fianna FAIL IMF.

Surely all the money he made in the last 14 years has made him a very very very wealthy man as it is.

Could he not volunteer to give it up ?

Anyone here who is arguing for a pro-rated cut in politicians pay, identical to cuts in social welfare rates, must also agree with either of the following statements:-

1) That politicians should have been paid much, much more during the boom years, in line with increases to social welfare, and
2) That politicians pay has been cut by way too much in the last 3/4 years, because they have been cut more than social welfare rates.

If you don't agree with at least one of these positions, then you can't possibly agree with what is being proposed in the OP without being an utter hypocrite.

Leadership Ryan :)

Enda Kenny, Gerry Adams, Mehole Martian, Eamon Gilmore could in fact decide to take no payment from the exchequer next year and it wouldn`t effect them in any way.

They are all wealthy individuals.

You must be a politician Ryan!

I would have no objection to politicians taking even bigger percentage cuts than those they will hand out to others!

How much extra does Sinn Feins Peadar Tobin get for chairing an Oireachtas Committee?
