One interesting fact I had been unaware of is that the networks supporting Chechen wahabi slaughter in Russia overlapped with the network involved in the 9/11 atrocity.

It seems Zacarias Moussaoui, the so called 20th hijacker who was arrested weeks before 9/11 was a recruiter for Khattab, a main commander in the Chechen war. Khattab was known to be linked to Bin Laden. However FBI commanders refused to do proper searches of Moussaoui's computer and home because at the time, Chechens were not considered "terrorists" by the Americans. Not sure thats true. The second Chechen war took place in 1999, two years before 9/11. The US had little in the way of interest in Afghanistan for the decade preceeding 9/11, and even less in Chechnya. And prior to 9/11 the US did not percieve Islamists as a serious threat to its national security. A claim now that there was something the US missed, beyond what is already known, is odd. History, unlike Antiwar.com, does not do such handy revisionism.

Khattab is actually an Arab. The Russians were butchering the civilian population and flattening the urban centres. The West wouldn't help so the Chechens couldn't afford to be choosy about whose help they accepted against Russia.

This is a very confused OP. I don't understand the main point.

Another interesting fact is the UK has been quietly supporting Chechen separatists since the 1780's.

Also... Thatcher link to Chechens will embarrass UK - News - The Independent
Thanks for that, Seabhcan.

I was aware from reading this book that the British had a long history of gunrunning to Muslim tribes in the Caucasus. The Crimean War: A History: Orlando Figes: 8589450000003: Amazon.com: Books Indeed the reason why Circassians got expelled from the Caucasus was because Russia could not maintain a fleet in the black sea after the Crimean war and so prevent British gunrunning to the Circassians. Therefore the Russians had to expel the Circassians

The main point is that some of the same people involved in planning 9/11 were also involved in supporting Chechen terrorist networks.

That's not that surprising. There are Salafists, or more correctly Takfiris in Chechnya too. The are attracted to any type of Islamic related militancy on the basis that they are more likely to find recruits that support their global grievances by exploiting global ones.

It's an attempt to mask the homegrown nature of the Boston attack.
... and an effort to link into FSB cooing about how it was apparently right and the US wrong about the Boston bombers. But if the US were to prosecute everyone the FSB deemed an enemy, then gays, liberals, intellectuals, human rights activists, the Salvation Army and most ordinary Russians would be on the FBI's watch list. To narrow minds that are admiring of totalitarianism, the Tsarnaev brothers provide a link also to how 'right Russia is' in supporting Assads murderous regime, and the Kremlins backward foreign policy in general.

While the Chechen war may have opened a door to the Islamists in the Caucuses, the Kremlims policy of general repression and human rights abuses in the region has kept Jihadism very much alive there. In fact day by day they are making it worse. If the Kremlin wants to point the finger at who is responsible for ongoing Jihadism in the Caucuses, then it need only look in a mirror.

There was indeed some connection between Al Qaeda and Chechen Islamist rebels, and after Bin Ladin got kicked out of Sudan and went back to Afghanistan his number two, and now current Al Qaeda leader,Ayman al-Zawahiri went to Chechnya and nearly got nabbed on the way back. But I don't' think there is any real evidence they informed any Chechens of the 9/11 plot, and many believe that Bin Laden made sure Saudis carried out the attacks in order to embarrass his home country which had disowned him.

Al-Zawahiri has led a very interesting, and bloody life. He was even involved in the Sadat assassination and only saved himself by betraying a co-conspirator.

The Israeli connection to 911

Of the 90 or so detained Israelis there was a group of five Israelis, now widely known as the "dancing Israelis", who were spotted in multiple locations filming, and celebrating the attacks. Their names were Sivan & Paul Kurzberg, Yaron Schmuel, Oded Ellner & Omer Marmari. "We are not your problem"?
According to ABC News 20/20, after the group of Israelis were detained, the driver of the van -- Sivan Kurzberg -- told the officers:
"We are Israeli. We are not your problem. Your problems are our problems. The Palestinians are the problem."

They later appeared on an Israeli talk show and claimed to be "documenting the event". Witnesses reported they were set up PRIOR to the first plane strike, and were seen congratulating one another afterward. The five jubilant Israelis were also seen photographing one another. The FBI seized and developed their photos, one of which shows Sivan Kurzberg flicking a cigarette lighter in front of the smoldering ruins in an apparently celebratory gesture.

Putin has just done an interview where he tells the story of how he confronted Bush on US financial support to Chechnyan terrorists. This was in the early 2000s, after 9/11.

Putin gave Bush the names of the CIA agents involved and Bush promised to 'kick ass'. Nothing happened. Later, the US sent a letter ascerting its right to support whatever groups it wishes.

Puts a new light on events, doesnt it.
