Following Eamonn Keane’s NAMA show lunchtime 14/4/2010 there were a number of texts asking that a march be organized indeed some suggested we should march every day until change is brought about.

This will never happen because
• The Irish are too docile, too used to taking it up the **** from the establishment and from Dublin Castle/Leinster House.
• We are far more concerned with nebulous concepts such as freedom, republicanism, the Irish Language and on and on than with our wage packet and therefore our welfare and that of our families.
• The places where we might look for the leadership of a protest movement –the Trade Union movement, left leaning parties ,intellectuals and artists all have their snouts in the trough and are seduced by the feelings of power they receive from seeming to be important “players”
• The youth are disenfranchised and disinterested—the next flight to Australia will do them it seems.

So it seems we are due to spend many more generations being reamed by the wealthy and we cannot even raise the energy to protest –sad but true!

Sad but true....

the only way i could see anything happening is if a 'wild card' ..i.e some incident that was just too much for people to bear then possibly it might happen...

But the OP is 100% correct on the trade unions etc....

Why on earth would anyone look to a left-leaning party for leadership?

The way i'm beginning to see it, is that there really are no non-establishment leaders in this country, because if there were then surely to god they'd have revealed themselves already.
There are probably some very capable people who, if it looks like there would be overwhelming support, jump to the fore, but that for me does not a true leader make - they should be out in front, holding the flag and rallying the troops in their wake.

It's so disappointing.

Sadly true. We only get antsy when those things truly important to us are denied us. :(

Oh yes. I forgot that the left have magical powers. Namely, eradicating social class and at the same time ensuring mechanisms are in place to create social classes. They are both clever and magical folks.

You left out the main reason. We have one of the the most generous welfare states in the world - that's the main reason we don't have civil unrest.

Funny, we had a very similar topic discussed at work yesterday.

We came up with taking away the TV. :p . Closing the pub didn't seem to matter too much, but then as a group we are all either getting married or having kids so have no money anyway.

Where as you are so predictable. So what do you propose other than shooting the handicapped or are you just here to slabber on about 'the left' because your tired of slabbering about the immigrants

Talking away TV would be a good idea. I think TV contributes to Irish docility.
