The "Further Education and Training Bill 2013" will be discussed this afternoon by the "Select Sub-Committee on Education and Skills" chaired by Joanna Tuffy. It is expected that FAS will be finally wound up with the creation of SOLAS. We should see the merger of FAS and the VEC's. How might all this manifest itself? Any thoughts.

I'd like to see more language skills being taught - it's what the multinationals like ebay and Paypal are crying out for.

Why didn't they just abolish it and save the money.

Why do we have to nursemaid people from cradle to grave?

Yes, SOLAS' eventual successor (continuing the long and proud tradition of using Irish words to impart a wishy-washy aspirational flavour to the org) will either be called "Staighre" or "fortaigh"

I would be quite cynical about this and reckon that it will be same old, same old. Will this improve:

Accountability. senior management mindset, more comprehensive training, follow-ups on training needs etc.

I have done contract teaching for Fás and maybe it's just this county, but a lot of the above don't apply here.

Because IF it was run correctly it would stop young people entering the workplace from exploitation and end up sweeping the floor for a few years before being sacked

Seems like nothing more than a name change. We have been here before. Anco became Fas, became Solas. They would be better employed trying to get international recognition of their qualifications so that the people leaving the country might find gainful employment

Other countries charge money to irish immigrants to do courses and exams to be allowed to work....Canada and Australia being cases in point...

We should use FAS to do the same and weed out the chancers and spoofers...we would also make a few quid for the state...win win..

There was nothing wrong with ANCO or Manpower, with Manpower jobseekers could actually talk to a Placement Officer and the 6 month work experience was good for both employer and employee, that all changed under Fás and they got too fancy for themselves.

They have QUANGOs delivering the training who hire a trainer, who has to be self employed, to teach a class for3 hours a week for 10 weeks. Now the courses "du jour" seem to be FETAC Childcare and FETAC Beautician Course.

Ahhh the memories....

Former FÁS worker jailed over

The court was told he created false tendering processes for video production work and then awarded the tenders to companies that had been set up by him to facilitate the fraud.

He then issued invoices in the names of these companies and was given cheques by FÁS, which he lodged to his bank account.

The names of the companies were very similar to legitimate companies that had previously been awarded contracts by the agency.

The fraud was discovered when directors of Yard Media Ltd - a company that had previously been awarded a lot of contracts for work by FÁS - noticed that the number of contracts they had received had significantly diminished.

When a director made inquiries she discovered a tender had been awarded to a company with the almost identical name of The Yard Media.
The last two paragraphs are quite scary.... it was only noticed by the legitimate company. Nobody in FAS noticed

Twas all Roddy's fault with his 'entitlement to fly first class' that sounded the deathknell. Otherwise we would probably still have it trundling along to nowhere. Remember: Disgraced Fas chief's
