Ireland's most effective Government Minister, Mary Harney, has hacked her way through another morass of public sector inertia and finally delivered the Fair Deal Nursing Home charges scheme, which will officially begin on Oct 22nd.

Its a bit late, and not everyone is going to get in on the first round, but this scheme is going to lift a huge burden from families all around the country who are dealing with financial hardship arising from private nursing home charges.

In 5 years, she's nuked the Health Boards, she's delivered a new Consultants Contract, a new Pharmacists Contract, the National Cancer Strategy, the Fair Deal, she's faced down the nurses and Ireland has moved from 26th to 13th in the Powerhouse European Consumer Health Index.

That's probably more than the last 5 FF/FG/Lab Health Ministers combined.

Never mind. It's amazing how under apppreciated she is if she's as great as you say...something's gone amiss there...

I can understand full well why she is the subject of such vilification, but in terms of actually making a difference to the area of policy which she controls, she certainly can't be accused inertia.

Its actually quite remarkable what someone who isn't tied into a large political party that has to watch its step in every parish in the country can achieve.

Lets see there was smokeless fuel and then she sorted out, eh, wait now.
A/E waiting times, no no, private beds saving us, no no, cut out the nonsense and ran an efficient flat management model health service that was patient centered, no no. Built a childrens hospital, no no. Em? What did she do that was any use at all, she had the largest budget any minister in the history of the state has had, and we have stealing your house or a bit of it to be tied to a chair in some kip.

People will never be happy with the health service, because it is where their relatives go to die, so it can never be good enough. There is no country that is happy with its health service. Harney is at least trying to make what we have affordable.

We also have the problem of the Ronan Lyons Pie Chart: http://www.ronanlyons.com/2009/07/20/menus-nimbys-and-a-maximum-wage-reactions-to-an-bord-snip-nua/ - people genuinely think the bulk of health spending is on bureaucrats and that a magic bureaucrat-elimination wand would free up billions.

Or of course, we could just rant hysterically...

If you define nuked as leaving thousands of bureaucrats doing no or very little work, she's nuked them alright.
The HSE was always going to take at least 10 years to bed in. At least, she had to bottle to kick it off. And now we have the requisite fiscal emergency to cut away the fat.

Now, now X-ray, don't sell her short.

She kept Haughey in office for years.

She kept P. Flynn in office for years.

She kept Ray Burke in office for years.

She kept Bertie in office for years.

She kept Haughey out of jail.

She gave us the HSE.

She reduced hospital waiting times by only measuring them from 5 minutes after the doctor started the examination.

She opened a window into politicians minds when she said the public forgets their scandals in 6 months.

She's ending the wasteful practice of having health services outside the M50.

Sure where would we be without her.

(On the plus side she did destroy the PDs and that actually was a public service.)

Is this some sort of a joke? Fair deal was promised years ago, the latest date was July this year, why the further delay? As it is McCarthy has already proposed an increase of the family contribution, the fund to administer is almost broke.
I'm just back from A&E where I was charged €100 to treat a child's broken arm. To make way for more admissions to A&E they moved his trolley to the coridor where there were 5 others being treated on trolleies, one a woman of 92! This is in a hospital where they Harney is threatening to close A&E.
When were you last in a public hospital? If you knew one thing about what this disaster of a minister was doing you'd cronge before you penned this sycophantic nonsense!
Facing down the nurses? They've had 2 pay cuts to fund her shambles in govt. no proud boast that, if she has real guts she should face down some of the administrators who're coining it.
The health ministers who held office since the child was born are Cowen ( screwed up the economy), Martin, (PPARS), Noonan (who pursued a dying woman over costs).

A slight exaggeration perhaps.

Ask anyone North of the Dublin/Galway line who have no cancer services what they think of her policies.

Ask the people of Monaghan how happy they are to have their hospital replaced by a nurse with a first aid kit.

HSE stands for Hospitals for the South and East. And the South should be nervous.

What is fair about stealing 80% of peoples pension then disinheriting his/her relatives of 15% of the value of their house? This seems to be theft of the assets of people who were hard working, tax paying citizens not so long ago. Now they are being raped of any money left where they can enjoy their old age.

How is that a fair deal?

People are discussing the effectiveness of Mary Harney. People are praising Mary Harney. People are suggesting that Mary Harney has improved the Health Service. People are....

Nah! I must be drunk!

what's goosebump's hard-on for Harney. he's constantly posting sycophantic ass-kissing sh*te about her and jumps down the throat of anybody who criticises her.
For what it's worth I think she's a disaster and no amount of spin from sycophants on p.ie will change that perception.

Occasionally goosebump's "stiffy's for Harney" are worth reading for their comedic value because only the truly deluded could possibly think that Harney is in any way possible an effective Minister (in a positive sense). The woman is a disaster, her behaviour in health shameful and the sooner she's gone from politics altogether, the sooner the country can start to recover.

The thread title should read "The Unfair Deal - Harney delivers for her Paymasters again".

He seems to have ommitted from his list the €190,000 she blew on a "fact-finding" junket in the US which included €11,000 on minibus hire alone. I won't even go near the hair-do's.
How is it possible to pour so much money into the HSE and still have such a bag-o'-sh*te Health Service?
