Green Party criticises Dublin council's warning to pedestrians | BreakingNews.ie

The Green Party have decided to take on Dublin City Council.. and has accused it of "waging war" on pedestrians in Dublin.

What has caused the Greens such outrage? What have the council done to be labelled war mongers? They have erected signs that say...

"Pedestrians are the Single Biggest Group to Die on Dublin's Roads. Think twice before you cross the Road."

There you have it.. the issues that weigh heavily on the minds of the Greens.....

Nothing wrong with warning people to be careful when crossing the road. You may be in the right but its not much use to you if you're hit by a car.

The city needs to be made more pedestrian friendly but in the meantime its a good idea to remember the balance of forces involved when a ton of mobile metal hits a human body.

I was in Dublin recently and was nearly knocked down.

Was standing at the lights, not looking, heard the beep change to tell me I could go across stepped out and nearly got hit. The lights hadn't changed but the beep had. Is that a common problem at crossings in Dublin.

I got a leaflet through my door recently from Ciaran Cuffe who's running for the council in the North Inner City. Surprised as he was a TD for Dun Laoghaire

Might do better challenging the Council and Gardai re: the chances of finding yourself in a fight, witnessing a fight or being mugged on O'Connell Street.

Muppets all they have to do is call in here to get some good ammo to use.

Sure, isn't that the sort of thing one does during an election!? (lets ask Pat Rabbitte...)

They have erected signs that say...

Seems reasonable to warn pedestrians of the dangers of crossing the road but isn't Ciarán Cuffe the green party clairvoyant who said in 2007 (just after the general election too)...

Ciaran Cuffe said:
"A deal with Fianna Fáil would be a deal with the Devil. We would be spat out after 5 years, and decimated as a party"
? He should get some credit for that, at least. Although the fate he predicted came much sooner than 5 years. Deservedly so.

Worthy of a thread? Nah.
You don't think that the green party claiming that dcc of waging war on it's citizens isn't worth a thread..
Jebus, if Hogan said that you'd be outraged by his bully boy and intimidation..

Your spin was lazy. He said "Of course we should encourage those who walk to do so safely, but any road safety campaign should primarily tackle driver behaviour as road vehicles are the real danger on the streets of Dublin.

Green Party Councillors will ensure that the City Council produces a Walking Policy that promotes, rather than deters pedestrians. Such a policy would include the following elements.
1. Expansion of 30 kph speed limits in residential area
2. Safe Routes to School
3. Longer Green Man time at Pedestrian lights
4. Junction narrowing to slow down heavier traffic
5. Greater enforcement of speed limits
6. Clampdown on vehicles that park on footpaths
7. Expansion of Loading Bays in the city centre
8. Kerb-dishing to make it easier for wheelchair users and those pushing a buggy
9. Pedestrian lights across all legs of junctions
10. Expanded use of Zebra crossings"

Jaysus!

Sometimes people don't think before issuing press releases.

<bangs head off desk>

Ciaran also thought paying Xavier McAuliffe €250,000 a week for the Greed Cameras racket was a good idea.

'Nuff said!

And an ex minister to boot. I would say the north inner city is not classic Green territory. Not enough mansions.

Stupidity is the real danger on the streets of Dublin, be that stupid drivers, stupid cyclists or stupid pedestrians.

The thing with stupid cyclists and stupid pedestrians is that they are the ones who will end up in the back of an ambulance for being stupid.

Green Party Councillors will ensure that the City Council produces a Walking Policy that promotes, rather than deters pedestrians. Such a policy would include the following elements.
1. Expansion of 30 kph speed limits in residential areas Excellent idea. I've been championing it for years
2. Safe Routes to School Excellent idea. I've been championing it for years
3. Longer Green Man time at Pedestrian lights Stupid idea. A countdown timer on pedestrian lights is a good idea though
4. Junction narrowing to slow down heavier traffic Causes bottlenecks, increased emissions, and expense
5. Greater enforcement of speed limits Total BS. There is no evidence that exceeding speed limits is a problem on our roads
6. Clampdown on vehicles that park on footpaths Excellent idea
7. Expansion of Loading Bays in the city centre Excellent idea
8. Kerb-dishing to make it easier for wheelchair users and those pushing a buggy Excellent idea
9. Pedestrian lights across all legs of junctions where it would provide a tangible benefit. "All" is always a stupid idea
10. Expanded use of Zebra crossings Most signal controlled crossings should be replaced with Zebra crossings

Expose the lot of them

What veggie councillors.? If such an vegetable existed how would it 'ensure' anything? There is still a degree of democracy, not much I give you, left in how decisions are taken by elected representatives.
