Forget about empire and slavery. This is about elites who exploit their own people.
A few examples for starters :
- Many rank and file Roman soldiers came back from fighting the Punic wars against Carthage to discover their farms had been 'confiscated' by members of the Senate
- The 19th Century Highland Clearances which removed the troublesome peasantry so that more profitable Sheep-farming could replace them.
- Recent Genetic evidence of the Medieval Aristocratic Elites contribution to the gene-pool of modern Europeans indicating that they very much 'owned' their serfs (or at least, the pretty ones)

any more examples ?

Middle earning PAYE workers/mortgage slaves.
Forced labour in WW2.
The US citizen paying $3k a year for military spending/subsidizing friends of those in power
Jobsbridge
Charging people 3 times for healthcare : taxes, private insurance and charges.
The day it was accepted that national funds were no longer taxpayers' money.
Incremental pay rises continuing after borrowing €90bn to fund deficits.

There's an interesting relationship between these two cited examples in that, acording to the historian John Prebble (in his book on the Highland Clearances), many of the Scots who returned from the Napoleonic wars found that their families had been cleared, just like the Romans coming back from Carthage.

In the same book Prebble records one of my own favourite (in a queasy sort of way) instances of such exploitation: many of the troops used to carry out the Highland Clearances were in fact Irish, and a favourite battle-cry among them was "Remember Vinegar Hill!"

If Carlsberg did ironies...

Among the most obvious ones must be the Head Honchos in the Trade Union movement. This isn't unique to any one country, rather it's a global phenomenon.

We don't need wars to redistribute wealth upwards now. We have money printing and corporatism, and it is rarely questioned by the great unwashed (or in the case of those who live on the Vinegar Hill side of Enniscorthy, the never-washed) because of the pervasive propaganda system that creates an amazing degree of consensus on most major issues. Wealth concentration has never been as high in recent times......but people "think they're so clever and classless and free......".

This thread is dangerous, because it is threatening to cause the serfs to question their position in the nEU order.

Something must be done to get the peasants back into line. Time for Suds to pen an article in THESH!TERIMES, extolling the greatness of obedience as the supreme virtue of the serfs.

nEU Empire.

As Proudhon said: "All Property is Theft"! Ultimately at some stage in history elites began to accumulate wealth - land initially and often accompanied by enslavement of former owners - through force.

There is a myth that pre Conquest Ireland was some sort of communist egalitarian paradise but evidence would suggest that the elite had already come a long way to establishing the ownership of clan lands by the chief and his immediate family.

Many Western countries are heading down the direction of total intellectual domination by a well funded, well connected elite.

But not SF.. SF are different.. ;)
In fairness SF have yet to hold power, they say they are different, time will tell.

The fact is if people go for the golden circle again, they will get more of the same from the Aherns and Indas, and the gillys and quinns.

So, it was a case of forced displacement mostly like they tell me in Wikipedia? I know of the concept only from a Sir Walter Scott book where the picture painted looked more of an actual genocide.

...or I am confusing the whole thing to the happenings in A Legend of Montrose regarding Clan MacEagh. But I vaguely remember the Clearances being brought up by Sir Walter in not at all nice light.
