Article here by Brian Igoe on Arthur McMurrough Kavanagh - a 19th century landlord who was born without arms. Descended from the Gaelic McMurrough-Kavanagh family who converted to Protestantism in the 18th century.

Arthur MacMurrough Kavanagh -The Limbless Landlord | The Irish Story

Couple more interesting things about him - he spent his early twenties wandering around India, he became a Conservative MP at Westminster, to which he travelled in his own yacht, he found the Land League baffling and put it down to 'religious bigotry' (handy).

But on the other hand he was apparently quite a decent landlord, in Carlow and Offaly, invested money in local industry and worked reform of the Poor Laws in parliament.

The Cripple Kavanagh-I've heard tell of him before. Quite a colourful charater by all accounts. He had no arms but was purported to have a huge c0ck and was a big hit with the ladies.

Good to know, doesn't seem to have made it into the article though.

I think that there might be an implicit acknowledgement:
"There is a story that, before his marriage, he drove his fiancée around the neighbourhood of Borris and pointed out several fine children of his own as a proof that their offspring were not likely to be deformed !"

No, it's there alright,"There is a story that, before his marriage, he drove his fiancée around the neighbourhood of Borris and pointed out several fine children of his own as a proof that their offspring were not likely to be deformed!"

No limbs but hung like a donkey. If Ireland had his likes now then the days would not seem so dark-seriously.
