Ten Seats up for Grabs. As usual the real sport will be in watching what happens within parties.
Sinn Fein have three in the race but three outgoing councillors were dropped with popular Paddy McQuillan not getting a nomination much to his annoyance. Fine Gael are running five candidates with the late addition of Garret O'Dowd the son of Minister of State Fergus . The ticket includes his uncle Michael O'Dowd a sitting Councillor who is hardly over the moon at this decision. Fianna Fail have also three in the field with John Govern added on this week. Labour for their part have two with Paul Bell and Pio Smith.

The independents include evergreen Frank Godfrey who is against everything and in favour of evertything.

Given the recent Opinion Polls it is hard to call. What is sure though is that a lot battles will be within the parties.

Give us a flavour of what Mr Godfrey is for and against?

Not a lot of change really, although Godfrey will probably be on his way. Bell should be OK but not sure about Smith. Far more pressure on the Independents because of the new set-up.

9.09% will guarantee 9 people 9 seats in a 10 seater.
The last seat could be taken by some one on as little as 5% of the poll though no candidate would like to be dependant on getting in on the last count.

The new large seat constituencies will punish the larger parties, as it will allow small groups a seat at the table. Very commendable of Hogan to implement the new regime.

Blah de blah de blah. I am only voting independent. No transfers will be had from me to any party candidates. So let them take themselves down and fight among themselves. The more fractured these self serving nimrods get, the better.

This time it's really a single area. 10 seats from Drogheda, whose electoral area has been expanded north and east. 750 votes was enough in 2009 for Godfrey and about 2K for poll toppers. It'll be more like a GE this time out and far more competitive.

10 seats for Drogheda. What a waste of taxpayers money. We are not talking county Louth. Even 10 local politicians for all of the WEE County would be too much.

All about geography dear boy. Very twitchy in this part of the world about that. :)

They seem to be running a lot of shiny new candidates. Maybe with the future in mind?

You also have sitting councillors Ken O Heiligh,(IND) and Ciaran McKenna (SP) running. Plus Stephanie Valla-Black for (PBP) and 2 DDI Candidates.
So its
3 Sinn Féin Kenneth Flood, Cllr Imelda Munster, Alan Cassidy
5 Fine Gael
3 Fianna Fail
2 Labour
2 DDI
1 SP/AAA
1 PBP
2 Independents that I know of,
all going for 10 seats.
