The Lady Eve 1941 Preston Sturges masterpiece with Henry Fonda and the wonderful Barbara Stanwyck.

The Frontpage (there's a 1970s remake too).
And a 1940 gender swap remake by Howard Hawks with Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell, His Girl Friday. Pure Magic.

If you like movies of that ilk Ger, check out The Thin Man with William Powell and Myrna Loy, sharp, witty whodunit that spawned a load of sequels and set the bar for comedy of the sexes.

Also Woman of the Year and Pat & Mike with Hepburn/Tracy are classics of this genre and The Man Who Came to Dinner with Bette Davis also featuring the wonderful Jimmy Durante.

Good choices all.

Goodbye, Mr. Chips with Robert Donat (39 Steps) and Greer Garson.
Garson starred in many of the 'women's films'--Blossoms in the Dust, Mrs Miniver, etc.-- of the time.

Brits made some great films in 30s and 40s.

Lean's Great Expectations is just brilliant. You can get the whole thing on utube. Must have watched it ten times so far, and intend doing so again over Christmas :)

The Magnificent Ambersons is really good, though not what Welles fully envisaged.
