Murder rates in Venezuela has soared this year, up 12% to 21,692 murders according to the Venezuelan Violence Observatory annual report.

Bienvenidos al Obervatorio Venezolano de violencia
The country now ha a murder rate of 73 deaths per 100,000 impaired to 63 per 100,000 last year and unlike its neighbours is not involved in a drug war or battle with guerrillas.

In Caracas the murder rate is 200 deaths per 100,000.

There has also been a surge in prison riots, random shootings and kidnapping.

We hear a lot about improvements made by Chavez, but such a surge in crime rates doesn't seem to correspond. Is the surge down to the Govenment or perhaps the recent absence of Chavez owing to his ill health.

Isn't Caracas one of the most dangerous cities on earth (one possibly excludes African and Middle Eastern capitals in the midst of civil war)?

Venezuela murder rate soars - Telegraph

According to the Telegraph as its reading of the stats:

There are more murders in Venezuela than in the United States and the 27 countries of the European Union combined. In Caracas the murder rate is more than 200 per 100,000 inhabitants.

A shockingly high murder rate.

Al Jazeria have some good reporting on the reasons behind it.

Why is Venezuela so violent? - Inside Story Americas - Al Jazeera English

Venezuela crime soars amid declining poverty - Features - Al Jazeera English

Basically, no one really knows why the murder rate is so high, but the justice system is totally corrupt so that must be a factor.
Well done Comrade Chavez.

Between 1999 and 2011, the Bolivarian Republic experienced more than 144,294 murders, according to Paz Activa, a security organisation, and the murder rate has increased more than three-fold since Chavez took office.

Poverty dropped from 50.4 per cent in 1998 when Chavez was first elected to 28.5 per cent in 2009, according to the World Bank, an impressive decrease by any standard. Government supporters credit the redistribution of oil wealth - Venezuela has the world's largest petroleum reserves - for reducing poverty.

Venezuela's Gini coefficient - an index that measures inequality by placing countries on a scale from 0 (perfect equality) to 1 (perfect inequality) - moved from 0.498 in 1999 to 0.412 in 2008, "a drop unparalleled in Latin America", according to the Brookings Institute.

"The Venezuelan numbers are surprising," Andromachi Tseloni, professor of criminology at Nottingham Trent University in the UK, told Al Jazeera. "Inequality is [normally] highly correlated to murder rates. I haven't seen another country where inequality has dropped sharply and homicides have risen sharply."

Venezuela is now described as "upper middle income" by the World Bank, but it has a far worse murder rate than Haiti -the poorest country in the western hemisphere.

So, if people are more equal and generally better off economically, why are murders rising at an alarming rate?
The murder rate in Venezuela is very interesting. Traditional sociology says it should be declining along with the poverty rate - but uniquely to Venezuela, the murder rate has risen as poverty has declined.

Oil wealth has massively improved living standards in Venezuela. Isn't the crime level supposed to go down as living standards go up?

How do you know that poverty has declined?

Isn't it a bit like the Cuban myth of the 'best health service in the world'?

Funnily they never boast about their tourist industries being based on being able to buy underage girls.

The Venezuelan government was asked about the high murder and crime rate in their country by a journalist, who responded by blaming the US!!! Chavez has been a disaster for his country. Hopefully whenever he pops his clogs the people will elect someone slightly more sane.

chavez has been a disaster for venezuela i agree, saying that a largely uneducated population has put him into power so as far as i'm concerned the people of venezuela get what they deserve.

Mostly caused by Colombian refugees.
Ecuador is also experiencing a rise in murders and kidnappings and this is also believed to be linked to tens of thousands of Colombians fleeing there and many organised crime gangs being established..
The question is, why are tens of thousands of Colombians fleeing a country (heavily backed by the U.S) to so called "far left regimes"
Why is it not the reverse?
Surely everyone should be fleeing Chavez and Correa and going to the Pro-U.S Colombia?
No?

Yes, an utter disaster.
Poverty in Venezuela Decreased by 22.6% over Past Decade | venezuelanalysis.com
The economy has grown as fast and as spectacularly as the Irish economy has shrunk.
Unemployment was 15% when Chavez took power. Today it's 7%.
Really ironic for Irish people to claim Chavez was a disaster when we're the laughing stock of the World.
