I think that the news that Gerry Adams is going to stand in Louth in the next GE deserves a thread of its own. Mods can correct me though if they want.

I don't support SF but I think that this is good news for all-Ireland politics.

As President of Sinn Féin and MP for West Belfast for over 20 years and an Assembly member Gerry Adams I believe will be able to represent people from Northern Ireland in the Dáil although he won't officially be an elected public representative for any constituency there. A lot of people in the South lost interest with Northern Ireland during and after the Troubles largely I feel because the people in NI had hardly any representatives representing them in the South of Ireland. Austin Currie was the only FG national politician from Northern Ireland in the last twenty or so years that I know of and I can't think of any in FF and LB although Mary McAleese was the official FF candidate for President.

I strongly believe that MP's for Northern Ireland should be allowed to represent their constituencies in the Dáil. Sinn Féin believe this strongly and Gerry Adams will articulately make this case as a Southern SF TD repeatedly no doubt.

As a TD for Louth Gerry Adams as TD, the President of SF and once IRA Army Council member will be able to draw on his authority, supporters and experience to make the case for unification. He won't be able to make a united Ireland come about but given his background he will be able to represent SF voters across the island. I, for one, don't like a lot of SF's policies especially on the economy and I am not a socialist, and don't like their past from the Troubles but I like how patriotic and committed SF are on the national question of unification. I wouldn't vote for Gerry Adams if I lived in Louth but I accept that SF are the largest nationalist party in Northern Ireland and represent a lot of people in the border counties in this state and a significant number of people generally. Having Gerry Adams as a Teachta Dála will be good for them but the way I see it (I am not too concerned about how happy they will be if he gets elected) him being a TD will be good for all-island politics and the process of uniting the country so that one state represents all of Ireland.

Gerry Adams has decided to think but most importantly act outside the box. Hopefully we won't be ruled by the IMF so that after the next GE we can see if Gerry Adams will really shine and attract or help attract more republicans of all persuasions into politics or taking more of an interest in politics throughout the island North and South.

benefits to Gerry Adams standing in louth:

1: Increase press coverage for Sinn Fein (Gerry Adams is the most highly recognisable politician in Ireland - globally)
2: The people of the 26 counties will witness, first-hand, the strength of his leadership (SF largest party in the 6 counties - after westminster election)
3: The idea of a united ireland will be highlighted more often
4: He will represent the people of the whole country in the capital

i could go on but just saw the time - i'm goin to bed.
I think its a great move for sinn fein and a move that will (hopefully) show floating voters that there is only one true alternative to the politics that has brought this country to its knees - sinn fein.

I agree with you about Gerry Adams but an Ulster Unionist getting up on their high horse is one of the saddest things to watch especially given the day thats in it and you have worn your poppy and all.

Might he be able to bring the British Forces killers of FG member, Séamus Ludlow, to justice? Not to mention those in power here who collaborated with these terrorists & told blatant lies to his grieving family.

Yawn ,yanw,Why do you not stick to Relatives for Justice website ?
If you are prepared to ignore the numerous deaths Gerry has been involved in why bother dragging up this paticular killing ,apart from the usual reasons of seeing things through your own blinkered prism.

If he doesn't get elected, there is a vacancy in the Bishop of cloyne job.

Sure he's already used to covering for paedophiles.

I say fair play to you carnival for being brave enough to confront this mans killers-

you clearly have the evidence and you clearly know who done it,

Hell I will even give you a lift to the local Garda Station and we can

finally bring those murderers down with your evidence,

Just let me know where I can give you a lift from

What are the Positives for NI if Adams does get elected to the Dáil ?
The only one I could think of would be that West Belfast might be better represented in Stormont.
Being that Sinn Féin will win the seat without a fight, I'd highly doubt it.

I wasn't suggesting otherwise - Even Mary Lou would probably be electable the once- however as it won't be Gerry Adams representing them - an MLA whose primary focus is his or her constituency would be an improvement.
That's a few times you've mentioned Mary Lou now Cruimh, might you be a closest supporter? ;)

As for Adams, I don't necessarily think he's done a bad job given the particular circumstances. Even sitting in parliament, an MP from Northern Ireland can't accomplish a great deal unless expressly needed to pass bills - East Belfast didn't exactly become a modern day Singapore under Peter Robinson's 30 year stewardship.

Remember that brutal assult on a four year old little girl was covered up by your heroes in the RUC....Bet you got great laughs when the reality of the misery and pain inflicted on her came out...

Just as Im sure you got great laughs making jokes yesterday with the ex-mercenaries down the British legion talking about torturing and raping little nig-nog children in "Rhodesia" and Iraq...

Do you realize just how sickening and twisted you really are?
