The power of the Backlash

History is full of backlashes which are often surprising in their voracity and often with unpredictable consequences. Often a backlash is a bigger Tsunami than the thing which triggered it. A few examples :

1. The Moorish conquest of Spain produced a brand of Spanish Christianity so extreme that it looked very different to what was found across all the rest of mainland Europe.

2. The Cartaginian General Hannibal swore to destroy Rome, and he made them what they were - brutal, deadly, cunning, and Imperialistic.

3.
HyperInflation witnessed in Germany in the 1930's produced a few generations of German leaders who will never inflate to climb out of economic problems. Angela Merkel is only the latest in the long line.
4.
The Trades Union movement in the UK. A good idea during the Industrial Revolution. Who would ever have thought that Industry would migrate en mass to another country where wages were cheaper ?

So, what are your favourite Backlashes from History. What lessons do they illustrate ?

Are you suggesting that the incompetence in the Irish institutional state will be followed by a culture of achievement, efficiency, productivity, and accountability to the people ?

Because if you are, then you are taking the piss !!!!

Good man Analyzer! Straight in with the knee jerk cynicism.
You should just franchise your brand of predictable, tedious and one dimensional posting out to others. It would save you ages every day bemoaning the state of the nation.

I've a double for you. Cromwell's scorched earth (and slaughtered inhabitants) policy in reaction to Irish refusing to bend the knee (1) and the ever more embittered opposition to British rule in Ireland in response (2).

Well I would qualify that by saying SOME Europeans. The problem is that SOME of "their victims" followed US home.

This thread as far as its starter is concerned is an exmple of backlash.

Raging racist has attempt to discuss history laughed at.
