Employment rate up for first time since 2008 - RTÉ News

Good news. Unemployment has fallen from 14.6% to 14.2%. In Feb 12' it stood at 15%.
It is the eight month in a row that the live register has fallen. Employment actually INCREASED in the fourth quarter.

There is still along way to go before we reach acceptable levels of employment but this is a good step.

PS. Before the usual economic illiterates turn up shouting about Christmas and all that, these figures are SEASONALLY ADJUSTED. So the number actually unemployed in the fourth quarter was 294,000.

Edit. Unemployment rate is now at 14.1% for February. Down from 14.2% at the end of 2012

I fear when the new taxes come in, it will depress the domestic economy even more and worsen the spiraling effect. Good news today, but approaching a critical moment.

I think the "Un" is a force of habit! Employment rose (barely).

14.2% was the rate at the end of 2012. The latest estimate is actually slightly lower at 14.1% down from a peak of 15.0% this time last year. Private sector employment grew by over 10,000 last year albeit entirely due to an increase in part-time work. Also, a large part of the fall in the unempoyment rate was due to people leaving the workforce (including emigrants).

Still this is a mostly positive release today from the CSO and hopefully that trend continues into 2014.

Just means less people are signing on because of fraud detection, emigration, etc. As Taxi Driver has said, employment has only slightly risen

Hmm but we have austerity. I thought that not only stops employment growing but reduces it as well.

Employment has not only stabilised but has started to grow. All the while our current budget deficit is falling.

I think we'll be way ahead of target this with regards to the deficit.

Employment increases by 0.1% in year to Q4 2012
There was an annual increase in employment of 0.1% or 1,200 in the year to the
fourth quarter of 2012, bringing total employment to 1,848,900. This compares
with an annual decrease in employment of 0.2% in the previous quarter and a
decrease of 0.5% in the year to Q4 2011.
Headline labour market indicators
Indicator Quarter 4

come on... this is just simply not an acceptable response
It damn well is for party shrill who cannot see that the fall in those on the live register is linked to the increasing levels of emigration from the state!
