I am not sure if someone has already posted on this, but this report in the London Times surprised me.

Russian spies targeting Irish tech companies

The Russians have increased the size of their Dublin Embassy from 2000 m[SUP]2[/SUP] to 10,000m[SUP]2[/SUP] and, according to the Garda:
Russia’s intelligence services have increased their activities in Ireland to spy on companies involved in the technology, engineering and scientific sectors...

There's more:
Russia’s GRU military intelligence agency is now regarded as a national security problem by gardai, as it is believed to be actively gathering information on Irish companies, critical infrastructure projects, and those involved in research at the ESA Space Solutions Centre in Cork.

Gardai are responding to the threat by identifying and disrupting suspected GRU officers working under diplomatic cover. Crime and Intelligence, the force’s spying agency, believes it has thwarted at least one attempt by a GRU procurement officer to buy high-tech equipment in Ireland through a third party.

In another recent case, gardai approached a Russian couple after they befriended a Dublin man employed in the technology sector whom officers believe was the target of a spying operation.

The couple left the country after Special Branch detectives asked them about their activities and immigration status. Gardai suspect they were withdrawn by Moscow after their cover was blown.

The rest of the article is full of other possibly nefarious actions, and/or suspicions that they may be taking place.

Are there any other known instances of Russian interference in Ireland? Are you worried about it?
Do you know whether the Chinese are spying too (I would not be at all surprised. Their recent tech advances are based on stuff stolen from the USA).

We need a dedicated counter-intelligence service like the rest of the developed world.

Yes - mind you seeing senior Gardaí all came through the Branch. Given what they did to Maurice McCabe - imagine the dirty tricks they'd do to the GRU & FSB. The spies wouldn't know what had hit them.

And prior to that a professional police force would be useful...
Plenty of professional guards.

It's the culture and the inner and jerk circles that needs changing

Rots was asked by the party to infiltrate the Guards nearly forty years ago... I told my superiors at the time, that the damage and ridicule to the party would be too severe by association, if it ever came to light we had attempted to give credibility to such a dysfunctional organization..

Of course it has happened before. When the Anna Chapman spy ring in the US was rolled up a few years ago, it was discovered that up to six stolen or cloned Irish passports had been used by members. A Russian diplomat was expelled from Dublin.

A large Russian spying operation was blown in 1983 - and that resulted in expulsions too.

I don't want to get all hot and sticky, but a few ministers in the most recent government were on very good terms with the Kremlin, in the earlier part of their careers.

And they also managed to express deep admiration for the family who run North Korean in the name of Marxism.

There are many personalities in the Irish media, particularly in PRAVDA-rte, who are highly compromised. And no doubt the FSB (KGB 2.0) have all the details on file, and can blackmail them if required.

Its the job of intelligence officers to report back on what is happening in the State they are posted to

'Spying' is gathering classified information

This is all part of a campaign to get us into NATO

Take it with a grain of salt...

If the Russians are interested in Ireland, they might want to clear it with the boss.

Oh...hold on....they had her old man on their pay, in the DDR days.

And then there is the fact that they have information on Donald Tusk also. Like what he family were doing in the 1940s.

Its not like me to agree with you on anything, but the "Sticks" were heavily involved with the Russians. The latter sent an arms shipment to them in 1972. I dont think the Russians were supporting them so much as using them to stoke tensions. There was also a number of Irish lefties who got as far as Moscow at the time. My belief is that many were turned the moment they got back to Ireland. The KGB wouldnt be the only people to have plenty on them petunia
