How different was The Soviet experince in Afghanistan compared to The American experience in Vietnam!

Both superpowers lost to peasant armies.
Both absurdly used their own conscripts.
Both economies were crippled.
Both had to fight guerila armies.
One were Commies who faught Nationalists who hated commies, the others were fighting Commies who were more Nationalistic than Commie, ultimately.
They probably defined a generation of Russians and a generation of Americans.

How do they compare? - Vietnam WAr vs Soviet-Afghan War

If you wish also please compare and contrast
The Soviet experience in Afghanistan to The American one there
And
The American experience in Vietnam to its experience in Afghanistan.

Yeah, I'm serving up a few biggies!petunia

The common theme is both got involved in other countries which they should have had no business getting involved in.

The Mujahadeen were not remotely as heavily armed as the Communist Vietnamese, they didn't have an air force, for example.

A Vietnam Vet described the American defeat as being down to sending basketball players off to play soccer on a foreign soccer pitch against local expert soccer players!
For The Soviets, Afghanistan must have been like sending Ice hockey players off to play polo on a foreign polo pitch against local expert polo players!

The domino theory which was probably the main rationale behind The American Involvement in Vietnam was pure nonsense and proven to be!
Also they underestimated Vietnamese loathing of The Chinese!

Yes and the millions of civilians who perished in that war along with the children born every year with severe deformities as a result of the chemical weapons used by America, are most grateful to them.

Lets not forget the 50,000 or so troops that died in that conflict most of whom were poor, working class men who couldn't avoid the draft because their parent's weren't rich enough to send them to college.

Both countries were technologically inferior to their super power opponents, making their victories all the more amazing.

Superb fighters (although the sadistic skinning alive of Soviet prisoners - after feeding them opium - gives the Afghans a really nasty edge)

By taking over from the colonial French administration and backing a series of authoritarian governments that were unpopular with the people of South Vietnam?

Quite a creative take on the word freedom I'd have thought.

I would say scores rather than millions ...
The Vietnamese never wanted Communism, its not in their nature.
Fair play to the Americans in trying to help them
Thankfully they are almost free of it now
