I hope to do a thread soon about the similarities between the economy of the Eastern Roman Empire and the People's Democracies that flourished in Eastern and Central Europe for around 40 to 45 years before being undermined and destoried by the CIA which of course resulted in untold human suffering (much of course to the pleasure of many who post here) in that it had a mixture of central planning and "free enterprise".

This is a fascinating recent Russian documentary....I cant recommend it enough.

Why did East Germany have to build the Berlin Wall?

Because, in a unique social experiment, people massively chose capitalism over communism, to the extent that the socialist state was unviable without national slavery.

Why does the same climate cause a famine in North Korea and no famine in South Korea?

Because Marxism-Leninism always uses famine as a political tool.

There does appear to be a western conspiracy against nations such as Romania. I never see any tourism ads about Romania,on the tv,newspaper or magazines here. When I told people I was going to Romania, they thought I was going to be a missionary.

Romania currently has the best music in the world, and 4th best internet speed in the world. Yet it appears that all that information is censored by the U.S. goverment

Any recommendations? This is the extent of my knowledge of Romanian music:

Also, I suspect that the ignorance of Romania about these parts is due to conflating the Roma with Romania.

Having watched this documentary I can say that it is historically inaccurate to say the least.

You've assumed he's based it on something. :) Honestly, the people who hanker after the vast open prison what was the USSR and its satellite states are quite mad. I mean that literally; as in quite clearly unsound of mind.

The radio stations here never play music by Romanian singers. There is no ads about tourism to Romania here. Everyone thinks that Romania is so dangerous, when it is safer then the United States.

The radio stations play what is popular and profitable.

Tourism ads are usually paid for by the tourism promoting board of the country in question.

I have never heard anyone say that Romania is dangerous, but even if they did, that is presumably an issue of perception rather than US Government censorship.

I know it is fashionable to bash the US for just about everything that is wrong with the world today but this is one of the most off-the-wall accusations I have ever encountered.

I have often wondered how the Byzantine Emperors viewed themselves. Roman probably as they would have seen themselves as a continuation.

The out workings of 4th crusade are interesting as many of the problems in the Balkans go back to that time. Venice in all its glory has a lot to answer for.

With very little extra help from the west Constantinople would not have fallen in 1453, but then there was all sorts of political and economic considerations, and divisions in the Church to complicate matters. The lack of support by the likes of Venice was extremely short sighted as they lost access to the Black Sea. One of the most stupid strategic mistakes in history.

Then come the end of WW1 and the strange games being played by France and Britain to the ultimate disadvantage of Greece and Armenia.

I think we see the area as different because of lack of proper contact for protracted periods and the religious differences make the problems worse. Though often I think religion is used as an excuse for non involvement. There are similar problems with the countries of N. Africa.

We live in a cosy Europe, a place that has lost its sense of destiny and purpose. A place that wants to wrap itself in the familiar and shun change. It no longer has the attitude of Rome or Greece or even the Normans and Vikings. The days of Empires is past, it is a place that wants to put on its slippers and sit and decline by the fireside.

The Byzantine Empire was more Greek than Roman. People spoke a form of Greek.

The Soviet Empire is no loss, it was probably the last of the territorial style Empires. Now it is easier to control the money and work through a local elite.
Though the Americans must be tempted frequently to boot out Karzai and take over themselves. Iraq has ended up dominated by Iran, who calls the shots in the new government.

Empires have no real place in the 21st century.
