See The end of investigative journalism? Not yet Despite the financial crisis and draconian cost cutting of staff, many US newspapers have made major increases in thorough investigative journalism reports mainly because that improves newspaper circulation. Given the enormous size of governments these days, it is a relief to know that the fourth estate is performing a critically important role in monitoring them. While opposition parties are supposed to be the main monitors of government, they are often too preoccupied with spin and gamesmanship and distracted by local constituency work to do so.
I joked with an editor of an Irish national newspaper that whenever they were stuck for a newsworthy story, they could always find one at the HSE. That approach is in line with the Daily Mail's politically right wing attitude that governments are always a shambles.

Newspapers are done. Good riddance. They blew it. Can't happen quick enough. How and why did they allow themselves to become agents of state and establishment brainwash.

They will appeal to a minority of people, with online subscriptions increasing at the big global newspapers and popular local papers.
