Ireland needs a Peter Tatchell, someone to express maximum outrage at perceived slights againt the gay community and imagined homophobia.

Instead we got stuck with David Norris, singularly unattractive to any sex.

Here are my nominations:

* Richard Waghorne
* Quentin Fottrell
* Frank (Brides of) McDonald
* The guy who sometimes turns up on the Afternoon Show.
* Maire Geoghan-Quinn
* Robocop from the Gardai

Homophobia is imagined?

I admire Tatchell; anyone who tries a citizen's arrest on Mugabe and doesn't accept the inverse racism of the hard-left about right-wing Islamist bigotry deserves respect in my book.

Peter Tatchell: Radio 1 needs to develop a consistent policy towards song lyrics | Comment is free | The Guardian

"It is shameful that Radio 1 and other radio and TV stations are willing to play Fairytale of New York with the word faggot included, when they would never tolerate the equivalent racist epithets. It shows they don't take homophobic language as seriously as racist language. We queers are yet again being sent to the back of the bus."

Yeah, of course, "imagined homophobia".

Tell that to gay people in Russia, in Zimbabwe and in other places, who get baton-charged for daring to hold a march. Tell it to the 17 year old boy hanged in Iran for being gay. Tell it to a friend of mine currently in hospital after being savagely beaten because his foreign boyfriend kissed him on the cheek and was seen doing so by some c*nt who decided to try to kick his head in for no doubt "pushing" homosexuality! :rolleyes:

You are a clueless bigoted idiot.

Tatchell doesn't live in Russia or Zimbabwe so less of the outrage. He lives in Britian and is fairly privileged in the run of things.

Oh of course - people don't get hanged in Ireland so who cares if some queers are hanged in Iran?

Going by your attitude, we should only be concerned by what happens directly to us. So then human rights abuses in Burma are none of our business. Starving people in Africa are nothing to do with us. Murders in Limerick are nothing to do with anyone outside Limerick.

I don't share his politics, but I respect Thatchell for standing up for principles just I respect people for standing up for principles in all walks of life. He is dead right to stand up for the rights of gay people in Russia or Zimbabwe, just as others were right to stand up for the rights of people in Apatheid South Africa, or people were right to stand up for civil rights in the North.

The paranoia of some on this site over gay people is bizarre, and says more about them, their agendas and their fears than anyone else.

How Society "Tolerates" Peter Tatchell

Peter Tatchell is indeed a very privileged person. There is a discussion on the UK Harry's Place blog just now about "Libertarians" who are so keen on sexual liberty that they support paedophilia and child pornography. The latest comment however comes from a spoilsport who points out that Peter Tatchell has expressed very similar views:
Harry's Place » Anarcho-Depravity

Harrys Place hides all comments after a week or so but this one - by "Joseph K" deserves to be preserved.

QUOTE
....... Just libertarians? What a shame. I mean the paragraph from Mary Ruwart:

Children who willingly participate in sexual acts have the right to make that decision as well, even if it’s distasteful to us personally. Some children will make poor choices, just as some adults do in smoking and drinking to excess; this is part of life.
makes a very similar argument to this one from Peter Tatchell

The positive nature of some child-adult sexual relationships is not confined to non-Western cultures. Several of my friends – gay and straight, male and female – had sex with adults from the ages of nine to 13. None feel they were abused. All say it was their conscious choice and gave them great joy. While it may be impossible to condone paedophilia, it is time society acknowledged the truth that not all sex involving children is unwanted, abusive and harmful.

Yet Ruwart is presented on HP as a degenerate, while the same website hails Tatchell as a living saint. [My emphasis] ........
UNQUOTE

Tatchell has indeed made comments like that on a number of occasions. How can be get away with it especially in the middle of hysterical campaigns targeting real -and imaginary - child abusers? Tatchell manages it because he is the Sacred Cow of the British liberal establishment - "He Who Must Not Be Criticised". His antics confirm the truth of the saying that "Cynicism is the daughter of Hysteria". After the steam runs out of the current child abuse witch-hunts, all we will be left with is cynicism - and REAL victims of abuse will suffer the consequences.
