Time for an Irish Security Agency

According to security analyst Michael Murphy on PrimeTime, Ireland is the only country in Europe without a professional and dedicated security agency.

AGS is unique for a police force in Europe responsible for both security and policing.

It is time for Ireland to establish a dedicated security agency to combat modern threats facing the State from cyber hacking to Jihadi terrorism.

We are the laughing stock on the edge of Europe. We haven't got the capability to defend ourselves from these threats under current intelligence structures.

Failure to set up a dedicated Irish security agency, properly resourced and given a wide mandate to protect the security of the State amounts to criminal negligence.

Taoiseach in waiting Varadkar has announced he will implement a Cobra style committee as per the UK. This is a good start but does not go far enough.

A state only maintains legitimacy by having the ability to protect its citizens. A security agency will go some way to achieving this.

Is this one of those 'great contributions' we have been told results from multiculturalism ?

Only if it means a board position for Frank Flannery and some very well connected FGers.

...what threats? This is fear-mongering nonsense.

Is this Michael Murphy an MI5 asset? Absolutely we need to set up a security agency now just as austerity is leading to levels of degradation that make a political reaction inevitable - we need to keep an eye on those people, place legal restrictions on social media, roll out facial recognition CCTV all across the country. We need, above all, to feel fear and trust the people who are doing all this to us, they surely have our best interests at heart.

Guy on late debate said that the State owes a duty of care to its citizens and failure to set up an agency is a dereliction of duty. He is spot on too.

Listen to Late Debate.
I'm listening and not hearing anything beyond the usual speculation. "Shannon Airport", "Islam is a problem" etc etc

Edit: The woman's point about Direct Provision causing resentment was interesting though

Edit 2: Alan Duke f-cking sucks.

To be contrary is there any sign that our security services are doing a bad job with regard to terrorism? Also is the fact that the G2 are Gardaí with wide operational experience outside of strict intelligence a boon rather than a disadvantage. I think a spook with experience in interacting with the public on a front line basis has an advantage say over one who's background is military.

Truly amusing to see posters calling for an "NSA".

When they calm down and reflect on the findings of the Morris Tribunal and how little has changed since then, they may be less starry-eyed about Irish Super-Cops petunia

Surely the State owes a duty of care to its citizens by preventing these lunatics coming here in the first instance.
