Today' Irish Times reports that, once again, Germany is making hostile and negative noises in relation to the modest proposal to increase the repayment period of some of our national debt to Seven years. Such a proposal would not remove from Ireland the obligation to repay money borrowed to re-finance the banks when the European authorities were somehow able to browbeat the previous Fianna Fail government into not allowing these banks to default on any bonds even subordinated ones but would improve a bit the cash flow associated with these repayment.

Germany may seek concessions from Ireland for new loan deal - Political News | Irish & International Politics | The Irish Times - Thu, Apr 11, 2013

Isn't it now time to remind Germany that after the second world war Germany as the offending party was given over fifty years for it to pay war reparations arising from the enormous damage it caused Europe up to 1945.

Politeness and restraint doesn't seem to be getting us anywhere with these people. Time for a little undiplomatic truth-telling perhaps?

Well we are not Germany and our clout is not quite as much as we might like to think it. Result we may as well save our words and our breath and get on with things.

Most of those Germans are dead so probably a bit of a wasted effort.

Even getting this 7 year concession without paying for it is absolutely no win!
I suspect it may have been unofficially factored in at the start as a probability!
The Krauts have a bit of a habit of burying the past and when they start acting the maggot they need to be reminded of it in no uncertain terms, slap them down as early as possible and NEVER, NEVER bend over in their presence or to appease them in any way!

Some trade off a few more years to pay the interest on an insane debt i.e. more money for them and we may have to for example destroy our SW system or minimum wage to have that privilege! YOU COULD NOT MAKE THIS ONE UP!

The Vichy government didn't stand up to the Germans.

No, you would have to be alive to not stand up to your oppressors. Context, very important.

Actually, you would have to be alive TO stand up to your oppressors. To not stand up to them could possibly mean you are dead. Context yourself.
