To stand as an independent you need 30 constituent signatures, how does that work?

Was going to wait until Monday and contact the franchise department of my local council but maybe someone here knows how the system works.

I know if someone wants to stand as an independent candidate they need to secure the signatures of 30 people within their constituency (who are on the electoral role) but can that be done by simply going say door to door or in the street etc or do those 30 people need to attend the city/town hall at a certain time on a certain date and sign some declaration in front of a franchise officer? How exactly does it work? Maybe someone knows or has experience of this process. Thanks.
