Fermanagh & South Tyrone MLA Tom Elliot was elected leader of the UUP at a meeting in Belfast tonight. More than a thousand party members from six counties gathered at the Waterfront Hall to listen to speeches from Elliot and his rival, Lagan Valley MLA Basil McCrea, before casting their votes.

Elliot, a 46-year old farmer from Ballinamallard is married with one son and is a member of the Church of Ireland. He is a Past County Grand Master of the Fermanagh Orange Order and is currently Assistant Secretary to the Grand Lodge of Ireland while also a member of the Royal Black Institution. He served for eighteen years in the Ulster Defence Regiment.

Hey, I know what you're thinking ... this guy is a goddamn liberal!

Elliot is perceived as being a 'safe pair of hands' for the UUP, which for the first time in its history failed to return any MPs at a Westminister election. Led by a conservative Orangeman with poor communication skills expect the UUP to decline still further at next years Assembly elections. Peter Robinson will certainly not be losing any sleep over Elliot's triumph

He isn't ashamed to say what HE believes in rather than trying to please people by saying what he thinks they want to hear, a good sign of integrity. Anyone who listened to the candidates are all agreed that Basil wasn't clear enough on what he belived in and what direction he wanted to take the party.

A new stronger UUP would benefit Sinn Fein mainly, split the unionist vote in the middle and they'll have to meet with first minister Martin McGuinness

Elliot was on Pat Kenny radio show recently - makes Poots sound charismatic, intelligent and progressive.

UUP now officially DUP without the brains.

Apparently it was 70/30 in favour of Elliot. Still not declared though.

Michelle Gildernew will be saying a few decades of the rosary tonight to hope that Elliot wins, which if confirmed will mean he will have to contest F&ST Wesminister constituency and this will further polarise the electoral trends there.
Next time out, SF win by greater than 800 votes..:shock2:

"A safe pair of hands". That was said about James Molyneaux. As was said at the time a safe pair of hands is no use if you are just going to sit on them

Throughout this entire campaign has Elliot ever actually given a reason why Unionists should vote for the UUP under his leadership instead of the DUP?

The guy is woeful - The dream appointment for Sinn Fein and the DUP. For Sinn Fein because his backwoods rhetoric will frighten moderate nationalists and the DUP because he has the personality of a three day old, half empty bottle of lemonade and all the electoral cachet of cancer.

Well done UUP, another step into the dust bin of history. I can only applaud!

Another throw back leader, just what we need up here!
Can't wait until im 60 and hopefully they'll all be history (Where they belong).

Never vote for someone who has a cape and loves creepy strange cults.
